Cream Legbars

Looks like a nice long back - straight comb and full crest to go with it are definite plus. he looks very round and filled out and has bright yellow legs and beak. Is that 5-points on his comb?
tail angle is high like so many of our cockerels - and white feather in tail is allowed in the SOP. Looks like white earlobe and wattles are not overly large. I would say he has a lot going for him.

He also looks like there is a fair wide-distance between his legs. How old is he and how much does he weigh?

Considering what you want to work on - and which hen(s) you pair him with - you may have just what you need right there. :O)

Thanks ChicKat! It is 5 points on his comb. I can't remember if it should be 6 points for the SOP. Glad to know the white in the tail is allowed as I see a lot of mine with the white in the tail. His chest was also something I was thinking was looking good. He is 4 months old give or take a few days. I don't know what he weighs I can try to box him up and get a weight but it won't be today. As far as females I don't have many left. I had an unfortunate incident with a bear and lost over a dozen of my flock. I will be culling cockerels in the next 2 weeks so I need to know who stays and who goes. Since the bear I did get 4 more chicks 2 boys 2 girls.

So sorry that you lost chickens.... that hurts! I guess it is hard to argue with a bear.

Incidentally, I like the look of that white sickle in the tail -- it is like a racing stripe or something.... different people have different preferences. ;O)

If the hens/pullets you have left are good layers, you can still get a lot of chicks - and they will be very much the 'same' if they are from the same family.

It's funny, I actually like the white in the tail but thought it was not allowed in the SOP and was something you breed against. Got my fingers crossed for my pullets and my new chicks.

Can I get some opinions of this cockerel. I have about 10 and will get pics of others later. Just thought I would start with this one. I'm considering keeping this one because of the crest and straight comb (so far). I don't like the white in his tail feathers.

Hi Cutiepatootie, I am really new to CLB but I thought I would add a critique. Keep in mind I am still learning though and that this is good practice for me! I think he has nice flat back with a good length. I like the size of his comb and wattles. They aren't huge and his comb is nice and straight at this point. He does seem to only have 5 points instead of 6. He has a good sized crest as well. He has nice enamel colored ear lobes as far as I can tell. He seems like he might have legs that are a little short but they thick and are a nice yellow color. Overall he seems like he might be on the smaller side but it is hard to tell in pictures. I would be interested to hear what his weight is.

He carries his wings well and tight to his body, though they might be a little on the small side.I think he has a pretty full breast. His tail angle appears to be greater than 45 degrees. He has dark barring and a substantial amount of chestnut on his shoulders and saddle. It looks like he also has chestnut in his crest and chestnut in his wing triangle. I think it depends on what you like as far as color but probably has more color than the SOP calls for. To be honest I am a little confused about how much color CLB's should have! I also tend to focus on color and I am trying to focus more on the body type and shape. I think he has a pretty good body type and shape. He seems quite substantial and not weedy.

I am sorry to hear about the bear. It is always hard to lose them that way.

Thanks BuffyBugSlayer. I'm very new to this too. I have plenty more for you to critique for me. I was just out feeding this morning and really liked this guys chest. I figured he'd be going to freezer camp soon because he has a large crest but then I noticed he had a really nice comb, minus a point. You brought up good points about the wings and legs. I haven't even thought about those yet. He has a lot of chestnut but not as much as some of my others. I got one with good color but the comb is on the small side, overall underdeveloped compared to my other Roos. I will most likely be holding on to this one for a while longer. Thanks

Y'know -- I have probably read the SOP numerous times -- LOL - we started working on it in 2012 BUT I often seem to often find something I overlooked.

Here is a link to the current draft of the SOP --

We are also in discussion about another alternative variety of Legbar - the working name is Crele and it is for those of us who prefer to have more color in our birds that the super-light ones - for example the Jill Rees line from Greenfire Farms... It is an open ended discussion - but certainly an improvement IMO from the days when someone would tell another person that their chicken 'wasn't a Cream Legbar' -- (not in this country - so much as overseas)--- and it would rather baffle the owner - because it had all the characteristics that are the most important - autosexing, crested, blue-egg-laying ...etc...so what's the deal?? LOL

Think about joining the Cream Legbar Club if you haven't already --- it's the place to try to get to the bottom of it all and delve into things like genetics, breeding strategies etc.
:O)

here are my 2 boys. they are around 20 weeks old.. and the silver one.. was suppose to be a girl. they are almost the same size. I
think the lighter one maybe be a few days (week) behind but he was a few weeks old when i got them.
i was told it had some black on the face as a chick.. so I could see how it would have been taken as a girl, but there is no mistaking it now.
I contacted the lady I got them from to let her know, it doesnt really bother me too much, other than I have 2 boys and 1 girl now..
but I got the feeling that she didnt believe me, so I sent these pictures to her, but I never heard back. I all really want to do was let her know if she
thought it was a girl.. maybe to watch out in the future. for me it just means I can get more girls!
