Cream Legbars

cute cute name and chickens. You really did get the red-headed side of the family - reminds me of the 'Weasley's' in Harry Potter. Nice yellow legs too. If I'm not mistaken, the red in the face of \hat one pullet signals that she is maturing. How old is your bunch?
LOL that made me laugh.

Frostbite on the comb and wattles.

I always feel so lost when dealing with frost bite and I have never had one get it on their wattles. I just feel horrible. My Marans cock looks bad too except his wattles and earlobes are very swollen I have never seen such a thing before. I do not like winter at all.

My coops look decent but maybe I need to make some changes to them, Im not sure.

so sorry for these difficulties, at least you know he had a lovely comb when you need that in your breeding program

Here is my McDreamy with his poor floppy comb. I don't know anything al all about coloring, conformation etc. so I'd love some honest feedback from you guys - I'm not planning to breed for anyone but friends and my own flock but would like to know what "the experts" think. So weigh in if you care to. Happy week to everyone!

Here is McDreamy with Meredith: (They do have feet - just buried in the pine straw LOL)

Wook at his widdle face!

Poor floppy combed thing. Only a mother could love.

One of his girls. I'm a little worried about the red - is that normal?

McDreamy being self conscious:

One of his other girls. She doesn't have the red on her face. This one is very shy.

I need some good names. Hate to name them after all the Grey's Anatomy crew but it would be kind of funny.

Hi, thanks for posting the pics of your cute chickens. I like seeing them in your environment; we raise our chickens in such diverse areas. Your photos are nice and crisp.

I would like to add my comments that the reds on your CL seem especially vibrant, and I have seen plenty of red in my flock. I think it is really pretty, but as noted, not in keeping with the proposed SOP.

There is also something about their shape that seems unusual as well, not sure if I can define it. I don't know if anyone else thinks the heads look small for the bodies.

The rooster's comb is actually not floppy compared to what we often see in Cream Legbars, but it does seem small. That having been said, he has a great crest which often results in a terribly floppy comb, so you have a nice combination there.

I would be interested in a better view of his wing triangle to see the barring/colors there. Also, the red on his wings almost looks mottled in the first pic?

Thanks for the post.

I glad you mentioned the underline. I have been unclear to what shape we are looking for. Does anyone have any wording that should describe the underline of the CL? To me Im not sure bowl shape comes to my mind when I think of the CL shape, but I could be wrong Im still learning. Anyone have thoughts on this?

Just a quick note to everyone, I am in no way an expert on CL or their type/color. Im learning the SOP just like everyone else. Im just always quick to jump in with my opinion when others ask because I feel its the best way for me to learn. So please everyone take what I say with a grain of salt lol because I am still a newbie like many others on here.

Hi, I feel the same way, the conversation helps me to think and rethink my own breeding program.

I did attend the Novato type evaluation with Walt Leonard and Curtis Hale, kindly hosted by Deanna @juststruttin , last year. Maybe a different descriptive word was used, but the bowl shape does seems like a good way to describe the curve that Walt was trying to impress on us, especially with the males: a smooth, full curve from the neck down and through the legs. It was suggested that a fuller chest would help to differentiate the Cream Legbar from a Leghorn and might have more eye-appeal.

When I attended a poultry show in Ventura Walt was showing me some examples of that line on other birds, and the chest wants to be full lower in the curve and stay smooth all the way to the underside of the body; not full high in the chest which tends toward a flat line and then angles back to the legs. Believe me, he has a judge's eye for very fine specifics, but is also looking for the first impression which could be characterized as the silhouette of the bird. I'm sure the Cream Legbar website has a much better analysis for anyone to reference.

Prefacing with I'm a complete novice and new to chickens this year I don't think I posted this here

I'm hoping to get some hatching eggs soon from another source. This is my one girl from the last dozen I bought. the 3 cockerels all had some serious flaws and are now freezer residents. This is about 3 weeks ago and she is squatting now She was a June hatch.

The pics were when she was being wind blown and I have a hard time telling size on her because she is with my Delaware and Buff Orps (she looks so small with them) I'm wondering if she would be considered more silver She is supposed to be Cream but I'm not seeing it in her hackles. Love her crest though.

I got her for the blue eggs so we will see how that turns out the egg she hatched from was a pretty blue so I'm hoping that she will carry on with that.
