Cream Legbars

Mine all like to use the one nesting box too -- no matter how many others are vacant.

Hello everyone! I am new to BYC but wanted to say hello. I hatched out 13 CL eggs this past fall and got 7 roos and 6 hens. The eggs were from CLs that were from the Greenfire Farms 2010 import.

The chicks are now 16 weeks old. I think I would like to keep 3 roosters (to be with the CL hens but also with my current layers), but I am not sure how to choose the keepers. Fastest growing? Color? Correct comb?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Hey welcome!

This is a really great thread. I will be absolutely no help to you because i know NOTHING about this breed except that I LOVE it. But there are some great folks on the board who really care about the breed and are unfailingly generous with their time and resources. I have fall babies, also from Greenfire. Are yours laying yet? Looking forward to pics! And cute avatar doggie!!

No, I need to get a scale. It's on my ever growing list of things to buy for this chicken addiction I can't control.

But it was small. And bluer than my EE eggs, but really those girls all lay sage and olive. It's the one in the middle.

Yeah, still green. Hoping Isbar.

The RFID tag idea sounds amazing! That would be completely cool - and if you figure it out, I'm sure there are lots of us addicts that would slap it on our list of "must haves". My girls all lay in the same nest box (they have 5 nesting boxes but NOOOOOO - only one of the boxes is not haunted and possessed by the devil.) So I never know who lays what and unless I separate them, I'll never know.

I've tried to spy on them and catch them in the act, but when I open the nesting box flap on my coop, I feel like I've walked in on my mother sitting on the toilet - that "OMG EXCUSE ME" feeling.

And of course the girl on the nest is like

Hello all!
I just wanted to pop in to see what some fellow CL lovers have to say. We just got a beautiful 3 week old CL today along with 3 other "babies" of a more "normal" variety. She is by far my favorite!

Look forward to hearing more of your stories!

Hello, I'm from the land of cream legbars (England

) but seriously I am considering this breed; how well do they cope in a mixed flock?
My one girl seems to do well but my breeds are generally non aggressive (Delaware , Buff Orp, Pita Pinta) In fact I got the Pita Pinta to be her companion at about 14 weeks while she was growing out before introducing then to the rest of the flock. There is always some sparring and adjustment to the order of things but once established everyone seems to get along. My little girl is not intimidated by the larger birds she is not afraid to go get treats or whatever she wants. Plus she knows she can probably fly higher than they can anyway.

Others Ive seen seem pretty similar they can stand their own but generally dont need to. (I lovingly call her my Yorkie chicken) Russian Wolfhound wrapped in a chihuahua body. (Without the constant yapping)

Welcome!

My Cream Legbars seem to do well in a mixed flock. I have them with many different breeds and they get along great. I don't see issues amongst them. Cream Legbar females don't seem to try to be at the top of the pecking order nor do they seem to fall at the bottom, they seem to stay somewhere neutral in the middle. At least that is how I view them, I could be wrong and that is only what I witness within my own flock. I do have 2 young pullets that are in with the Silkies and the Silkies do push the CL pullets around. I don't think that is breed specific though, rather due to younger age and individual personality.

What other breeds do you raise, or plan to raise?
