Cream Legbars

I put a dishpan into the henhouse (worried they would need to start laying before I had the nest boxes built), and I peeked through the egg door to spy on them... Got some nice shots.

I love how they came to check on you!

Sadly, I cannot breed them anyway since I can't have roosters here..

Paula does look like Eden (sorry if I got everyone mixed up - Esmé is my French Lavender Marans and Eden is my Rees C. Legbar)! Jenny is such a beautiful chick!! Gosh that deep chocolate line that runs in the middle of her head is GORGEOUS! I also love, looooove her coloring! How did she turn out when older? How did Paula turn out? We will see how the Hale chicks look this Tues/Wed!

How sweet of Paula to look after a sweet chick! If she won the coveted avatar picture, is she one of your favorites?! Not that you'd have any.. you know

Thank you so much for your kind words <3 It sincerely makes me feel better.. I still feel so guilty. If I hadn't fed her that night she'd still be alive now because she was recovering quickly.. But if I hadn't fed her, would she have died from an empty stomach? I'll never know..

Yes! They are so much work!! Gosh, having the brooder in my room is so bittersweet. On the up side, these chicks are so tame and will fall asleep in my hands. The bad - well, veeeerrry annoying side is that my Splash Isbar non stop peeps all day everyday. I literally spend the whole day moving the heat lamp up and down just to get her to stop peeping for a while. It's almost as if she craves human contact. As soon as she sees me and I pick her up, she stops peeping and falls asleep in my hands. When she's back in the brooder she just starts up.. There is nothing wrong with the brooder. The thermometer says it's a toasty 90 degrees. I have it set up so there is a quarter section that is where the light is concentrated on (in case they get cold at night), then of course it fades to a warm area, and there is a completely shaded area. I have no idea what she's so fussy about.. maybe she's just a loud one?

And that's it! You've convinced me to get at least one Naked Neck!! I'm excited! I'm going to call the feed store and see if they have any!
I will be very intrested in the Secret Hill Ranch Rees line vs Curtis Hale line comparison. :)
Stay tuned then!

I should be getting the other batch on Tues/Wed! How do I go about making a page? I've seen people do it where they have their own pages to post their pictures?

What gorgeous girls!! I love the crest of the one to the left on the last picture! Which one is Paula and which one is Jenny? They are so pretty! I'm starting to think I should've ordered from MyPetChicken! Ahhh! I am so excited for you to get eggs! My oldest are barely 9 weeks so I am so far away... I can't wait! I'd love to see what colors they end up laying!

Paula was on her own with me for a week before I got her more companions. She peeped non-stop until I got her a mirror (which she then slept cuddled up next to), but we still had a lot of TV watching time together bonding. So yeah, she's probably my favorite.

You should search BYC about your non-stop peeping chick. I did when Paula did that - some just are like that, but if you pick them up every time, they learn to peep for attention, I think.

Paula is the one in the back with the floppy comb, sitting on the roost, Lissa (short for Clarissa) is on the left with the poofy crest and is the "prettiest" of the three, classically speaking. Jenny is on the right. Lissa and Jenny are named after the Two Fat Ladies (cooking show on British TV in the 90's). Paula is named after Paula Deen (and shares her attitude).

No....My first CLB cockerel was.  He became chicken enchilada.

My second cockerel was a lot better but I still didn't trust him.

My 3rd one didn't have a mean bone in him.  This week I has three of his 6 months old grand sons in a run that I entered and my young children came in with me.  My 1 year old when right over to one to try to pick him up and he didn't have any problem with her at all.  He just did the duck and dodge, got out of reach and that was it.  For cockerels they are about as good of temperment as it gets. So...eat the mean ones breed the good ones any your flock will be a delight. I haven't had any agressive cockerels in a long time.  Note:  Even though I had some agressive cockerels it is NOT a breed thing.  anyone that has worked with cockerels from a lot of breeds knows that even the breeds with the best reputation can have a few agressive cockerels.  Just cull them and move on.  There are lots of nice ones to take the mean ones places.

Wel....I am going to have to consider that. My daughters would probably object but I wI'll talk to them.

Are all Legbar Roos agressive??? I saw that it was part of their behavior.I just wanted to double check.

In my experience, occasionally, but not usually. I have a rooster run with mostly cream legbar roosters, and they are very predictable and sweet, I never worry about turning my back on them. The same is true for the majority of my CL roosters with hens; however I have had to permanently remove a couple.

I might have just been given a bad seed and will have to try again. But he is just so pretty!!!

Aww, she had some good one on one quality time!!
She's still peeping like craaaazy, but I stopped picking her up! I've gotten used to it now and just live with it.. This is life now.. My life's new theme song is a shrill peeping that plays through all events - whether exciting or mundane.. I've accepted it

They are all extremely gorgeous!!! I love how their names are based off chefs!!

Oh! the shipments of chicks arrived today, instead of yesterday on my birthday as I planned ):
I literally just received them thirty minutes ago! The Splash Isbar was extremely weak.. but when I dipped it's beak in Save-A-Chic, it drank with gusto.. then it's neck fell back as if it used up too much energy, I put it in a warm spot.. and it passed away just 15 minutes ago. It's always the breeds that I'm the most excited about that pass..

Anyway, here are my two Curtis Hale Cream Legbars vs. my Jill Rees Cream Legbar (and my Blue Copper Marans just thrown in because you guys are the first I've told about this shipment!)

First off, the Curtis Hale line:

^ Chick #1

^ Chick #2

^ Jill Rees line

And my little Blue Copper Marans:

Alright, so you guys are probably sharing the same disappointment as me.. Both lines for this particular breeder have pretty bad auto-sexing qualities. This is breaking my heart, as I've spent a good amount of money on them (a little more than $200 on 8 chicks with two dead). I was hoping to find two gorgeous dark chicks with definite lines running through their heads and bodies today.. but that wasn't the case. Both are still incredibly cute but I am also beating myself up for not getting another Rees and then a Hale instead of two Hale's. It also seems the Hale chicks have a redder tint but of course they are chicks and we cannot know for sure yet. The breeder told me her Hale hens/roo's are more silver than the Rees'. Sigh.. I can't get over the disappointment, but they'll only be pets and not bred so I guess it doesn't matter much.

Ya...that #2 is pretty bad. I have only seen one that was that bad. In 2013 I hatch a pullet that was really light in color and a cockerel from the same pen that was really light. Some of the folks at the time were saying that the light chick down birds turned out with better mature colors and that the lighter color was a clue for the Cream Gene. So I pair mated them and did a test hatch. They turned out like #2. They were both removed from breeding and not used after the first hatch.

As far as the higher down being better goes, I debunked that theory. The pullet had way too much red enhancement. The Cockerel had way too much red too. Nither of them had any cream expression. They red enhanced gold duckwings.

After studying that pair I concluded that they were likely carriers of the Wheaten Primary color pattern. That would certainly explain the red enhancement and would explain what was going on with the down color.

Note the red ring around the collar of #2. It is a tell of the red enhancement.

The first one isn't that great either. I wouldn't be suprised if she is carrying one copy of whatever #2 got two copies off. Lol

below are some better examples of autosexing from my flock.

The Rees chick is the best of your three for autosexing markings. :)
