How sweet of Paula to look after a sweet chick! If she won the coveted avatar picture, is she one of your favorites?! Not that you'd have any.. you know![]()
Paula was on her own with me for a week before I got her more companions. She peeped non-stop until I got her a mirror (which she then slept cuddled up next to), but we still had a lot of TV watching time together bonding. So yeah, she's probably my favorite.![]()
Yes! They are so much work!! Gosh, having the brooder in my room is so bittersweet. On the up side, these chicks are so tame and will fall asleep in my hands. The bad - well, veeeerrry annoying side is that my Splash Isbar non stop peeps all day everyday. I literally spend the whole day moving the heat lamp up and down just to get her to stop peeping for a while. It's almost as if she craves human contact. As soon as she sees me and I pick her up, she stops peeping and falls asleep in my hands. When she's back in the brooder she just starts up.. There is nothing wrong with the brooder. The thermometer says it's a toasty 90 degrees. I have it set up so there is a quarter section that is where the light is concentrated on (in case they get cold at night), then of course it fades to a warm area, and there is a completely shaded area. I have no idea what she's so fussy about.. maybe she's just a loud one?
You should search BYC about your non-stop peeping chick. I did when Paula did that - some just are like that, but if you pick them up every time, they learn to peep for attention, I think.

What gorgeous girls!! I love the crest of the one to the left on the last picture! Which one is Paula and which one is Jenny? They are so pretty! I'm starting to think I should've ordered from MyPetChicken! Ahhh! I am so excited for you to get eggs! My oldest are barely 9 weeks so I am so far away... I can't wait! I'd love to see what colors they end up laying!![]()
Paula is the one in the back with the floppy comb, sitting on the roost, Lissa (short for Clarissa) is on the left with the poofy crest and is the "prettiest" of the three, classically speaking. Jenny is on the right. Lissa and Jenny are named after the Two Fat Ladies (cooking show on British TV in the 90's). Paula is named after Paula Deen (and shares her attitude).
No....My first CLB cockerel was. He became chicken enchilada.
My second cockerel was a lot better but I still didn't trust him.
My 3rd one didn't have a mean bone in him. This week I has three of his 6 months old grand sons in a run that I entered and my young children came in with me. My 1 year old when right over to one to try to pick him up and he didn't have any problem with her at all. He just did the duck and dodge, got out of reach and that was it. For cockerels they are about as good of temperment as it gets. So...eat the mean ones breed the good ones any your flock will be a delight. I haven't had any agressive cockerels in a long time. Note: Even though I had some agressive cockerels it is NOT a breed thing. anyone that has worked with cockerels from a lot of breeds knows that even the breeds with the best reputation can have a few agressive cockerels. Just cull them and move on. There are lots of nice ones to take the mean ones places.
Are all Legbar Roos agressive??? I saw that it was part of their behavior.I just wanted to double check.
In my experience, occasionally, but not usually. I have a rooster run with mostly cream legbar roosters, and they are very predictable and sweet, I never worry about turning my back on them. The same is true for the majority of my CL roosters with hens; however I have had to permanently remove a couple.
Aww, she had some good one on one quality time!!
She's still peeping like craaaazy, but I stopped picking her up! I've gotten used to it now and just live with it.. This is life now.. My life's new theme song is a shrill peeping that plays through all events - whether exciting or mundane.. I've accepted it![]()
They are all extremely gorgeous!!! I love how their names are based off chefs!!
Oh! the shipments of chicks arrived today, instead of yesterday on my birthday as I planned ):
I literally just received them thirty minutes ago! The Splash Isbar was extremely weak.. but when I dipped it's beak in Save-A-Chic, it drank with gusto.. then it's neck fell back as if it used up too much energy, I put it in a warm spot.. and it passed away just 15 minutes ago. It's always the breeds that I'm the most excited about that pass..
Anyway, here are my two Curtis Hale Cream Legbars vs. my Jill Rees Cream Legbar (and my Blue Copper Marans just thrown in because you guys are the first I've told about this shipment!)
...
Alright, so you guys are probably sharing the same disappointment as me.. Both lines for this particular breeder have pretty bad auto-sexing qualities. This is breaking my heart, as I've spent a good amount of money on them (a little more than $200 on 8 chicks with two dead). I was hoping to find two gorgeous dark chicks with definite lines running through their heads and bodies today.. but that wasn't the case. Both are still incredibly cute but I am also beating myself up for not getting another Rees and then a Hale instead of two Hale's. It also seems the Hale chicks have a redder tint but of course they are chicks and we cannot know for sure yet. The breeder told me her Hale hens/roo's are more silver than the Rees'. Sigh.. I can't get over the disappointment, but they'll only be pets and not bred so I guess it doesn't matter much.
