Some pictures from yesterday and today.


And one of the two cockerels. 4 months old. I was hopeful for their tails but this week the squirrel tails are popping up LOL!


And the new legbar pen. They are allowed to free range on a rotating schedule with the other pens. So far no one has tried to escape- but I hear Cream Legbars are great fliers so we may resort to covering the top!

I think he's a very nice boy! Love your pens also.
I have a series of chain link dog kennels. You'll probably need to cover them at some point. I tried not to but they are flighty and will try to fly out or at least roost on top. Before I ran out of space and had to move my pens across the back yard I had a tree in the pen that I had to wrap my aviary netting around. The hawk still sometimes sits right on the top of the panels or the coop. He just can't get in like he did when I found him just munching away on my fave BCM hen last spring.

I could not tell he had a squirrel tail but maybe as his feathers mature it'll angle back down.

Now three, he
Remembered his crown;
Red and lopsided
Over intense eyes:
Flies frozen in
Dark amber. He
Knows he could
Be a meal. He
Stares in the
Face of death,
Red crown flopping
Over frozen fly
Eyes. Around
Him his court;
Two princes plot,
Strutting, planning
To steal away
The throne. The hens
Are on their side,
Crowding around their
Valiant princes as
They scratch, peck
And cluck the day
Away. Oblivious,
The king struts across
The shielded yard,
Light dappled
Over his cape
And red crown
Casting shade
On frozen fly eyes.

I have noticed that the darker the hen the more green pigment you will see in the eggs. Not sure if there is any connection or not, but that is my observation.

I have noticed that the darker the hen the more green pigment you will see in the eggs. Not sure if there is any connection or not, but that is my observation.

Now that is an interesting avenue to research. I think we need to, as someone mentioned on one of these threads awhile back -- catalog all the colors, and definitely use tip offs like this one if there are indicators of the differences in color.

IMO being able to tell which hen has produced which egg is one of the most useful and valuable tools of flock management. Lucky you!!!

I've got about half of mine down, more if you count the two Welsummers and their eggs as interchangeable. ;-)
