Cream Legbars

thanks to all for the "hatch" encouragement
my enthusiasm was then tempered by the "culling" discussion
final plan to be determined
worse case, I'll buy eggs next spring from everyone who bought new breeding lines from GFF =)

Steen - I like the black breasted pullet! ???

Sorry to hear you lost her. Excess dietary calcium causes kidney damage, which occurs over time and not as an acute toxicity, so it should not have hurt her to eat it for such a short amount of time.

Thanks for the info! I guess the big guys killed her then

The only damage I found was a bit of pink on the inside of a leg, but maybe they threw her around or something.

kinda weird though. has anyone else got a black breasted pullet.

Steen - I hear your concern - I lost most of my older cream legbars to a coyote attack a few days ago, I have only one survivor with cream hackles and a beautiful blue egg. My cockerel took a beating, he's off to the vet today because I can't decide if he's doing better or worse. I have some pullet eggs I could hatch from this group, but I was planning to wait until the fall so the parents would be about a year old. Any thoughts on whether to hatch or not?
hatch as many as you can. I hope your roo makes it. nice to hear of one fighting them off and surviving

All it takes is one good peck on the head for a big guy to kill some babies. Ive seen a lav Am roo kill another lav Am roo with a few good pecks on his head he was dead shortly there after. He had already lost a fight i believe, looked groggy but i didnt know what was going on. i kept feeding everyone. I looked over and noticed the one mounted the other like it was mating but just pecked his head 5 times really hard before i could ever get back into that pen. he was done it was so sad.,

So this week I got 5 females and 3 males! Finally! :)

Also I am feeling proud of myself and flexing my shipping muscles today- earlier this month I shipped juvies to California, eggs to Washington and Arkansas, and chicks to Alaska and Michigan. And I just got my special import permit to ship hatching eggs to Hawaii! Amazing!

It would be amazing if you (as well as others with experience) could write something up on shipping for one of the CLC's newsletters. I have shipped hatching eggs with great success, but shipping actual live birds is pretty intimidating.

It is a little intimidating- I was on PINS AND NEEDLES waiting for the batch of Alaska chicks to arrive, especially since they took a day longer then USPS estimated! I sent them Monday afternoon, they did not arrive until Thursday morning. She only lost one chick out of about 18! She just called me to place another order- I take it in this afternoon- and I hope the post office is just as kind with this shipment!

I submitted an article (photos included) on shipping hatching eggs for the Cream Legbar Club essay contest. Maybe it will be published next month since it was the only entry.

But the limit was 500 words so I couldn't write about shipping birds, too. Maybe next time!
