Cream Legbars

Quote: Oh, yes (although with GFF you at least know exactly what you are getting)

Chicken math in action: if you do 1 female chick @ $59 then 5 males @ $19 ( those are packing peanuts because their guarantee only is good if you get a 6 chick minimum--- and the crux of the chicken math equation) that's $159 plus shipping for the one female. But you at least know that you will be getting one female. Plus you should probably get 2 females just in case the first one isn't what you are looking for to compliment your flock.

I haven't had the urge to drop that amount of coin, although I should add *yet* because that new line looks like it might be worth the investment

But I should probably order more hatching eggs from somewhere as back-up, right?

Every so often GFF will sell hatching eggs...you just have to ask and the worst they can say is no :) OR you can road trip there and get any amount of chicks you want!

My first foray into shipped eggs:

10 CL eggs, two hatched, one hens, on roo
14 Black /Blue Copper Marans: 3 hatched all black and I wanted Blue....

20% hatch rate.....so basically I paid over $100 for one CL hen....the rest will be sold......

Yep, that sounds about right, unfortunately. The next time one of my hens goes broody I may try again to remove 'me' from the equation.

I've been meaning to ask about your Border Collies. Are they ABCA or USBCC or (dare I even ask) AKC or? Love your avatar giving me the 'eye'!

My dogs are registered ABCA, and I compete in the USBCHA events. I run in the Open class (professional)....I don't do AKC or conformation. My dogs are working dogs and I have a sheep farm (and a day job) We also have Arabs, Livestock Guardian dogs, geese, ducks and feral cats (who now have moved into the house)

I have chickens and recently got into getting the Marans. CL, Rhodebars, Spitzhaubens, Swedish Flowers Hens and hopefully soon, Isbars.

The avatar dog is my beloved Tess who recently passed away....she was the love of my life and I still grieve for her.

This it's the reason I swap for eggs add not buy eggs. This way I'm out $8-$20 for shipping my swap outand not $100! I've got someone also trading me 2 polish for a trio of CCL. I'll have plenty for a breeding pen next year.

i guess i got lucky with the hatching eggs. I set 41 and got 13. 4 salmon favorelle, 4 Norwegian Jearhon (two pairs) . 3 chocolate ameraucana

Yay, that's excellent. Refresh my memory, what type of incubator are you using? Do you use a separate hatcher or hatch in the incubator? Norwegian Jaerhons are really cool and Salmon Faverolles are currently my daughter's favorite--super-puffy cheeks and demure personalities.

i was hoping i could make enough money for a real incubator by next spring but that's not looking good. I have the hova bator. an auto turner and the fan in it. I set the jearhon 3 days before the faverolles and the ameraucana the day after the favs.

I stopped the turner on the jearhon on day 18. i took the egg rack section they were on out and set them on the floor of the bator. and then i turned the turner off with the favs and am eggs still in it when the jearhon started to hatch a day early. which maid the favs stopped turning on day 17 and the ams on day 16 stopped. The ams and the favs hatched on the same day. so the ams were a day early also.

I kept it around 40% humidity as best as i could threw out the incubation period and it bumped up to 70-84% on the hatching days..I tried to open it up a cpl times and air it out and drop the humidity after the jearhon hatched to give the rest of the eggs a break form the high humidity until they hatched a few days later. The tray was almost bone dry right before the favs and ams started to hatch so i poured some water in and the humidity bumped right back up from the 40s into the high 70s-80s
