I love those two! I never thought about smaller eggs having a more saturated color.
I am really looking forward to the day when I get my Legbars!

I set 18 legbar eggs in the bater on tuesday. I cant wait til they hatch. This is going to be a very long 3 weeks. lol

The folks that sell the OAC ask me why so many people were suddenly interested in it. They were surprised and very happy to hear we were using it for egg color.

I will also often use the Araucana color chart, they sell it on their breed website. It has a wider range of colors in the blue green range then the OAC.

Anyone can evaluate a bird using black and white photos. It is an excellent way to look at type without the distraction of color, and its mentioned often on breed threads. Caging two birds next to each other works great if you are picking between them (assuming you have two), but not maybe so much if you are looking at judging them against the standard.

actually there was an article on the main page carousel it talked about caging to judge to see which bird meets the standard the best. like you said if your to pick which one your wanting to use to show or breed. The article mainly was talking about showing them if i remember correctly. and it was saying its the best way to see which meets the standard the best. So you could get an accurate assessment of what you have and choose the right one per the SOP.. . it was a rather good article.

My oldest CL rooster started crowing this week - it sounded like he was dying, I swear. My other Roos have all started with a perfect crow, but this was like a dying cat. It cracked me up.

Hopefully his girls will start laying soon now! This breed matures so slow!

When my Brahma Roo started crowing he honked at the end of his crow, it was hilarious!!! Sounded like a goose

My Ancona Roo is now crowing and sounds like a teenage boy who's voice is changing

Still waiting for my RIR to get his crow on.

My RIRs are crowing now. They sounded like the teenage boy going through the voice change too. All my RIRs are 20 to 21 weeks now. I am wondering how long it will be for them to start laying.

No problem, I was confused...

I have two juvi boys that are on Death Row right now, it is such a disappointment, as one of them has very nice color and type, but both have wry tail (a definite DQ). They were hatched out of eggs from 2 different sources, and both were the only cockerels to hatch out of each batch. A young Basque cockerel in the same pen is a really nice young bird, but not needed for breeding. All 3 are going to have to go soon, as I will be needing that pen for the 4 pullet chicks that just hatched this week. Still trying to get a really good cockerel, my main guy is actually a nice bird but the backup is not what I was hoping for. Who would think I would be hoping for boys!! I may have to reconsider getting a few chicks from GFF.

I can't remember if it was this one or The Legbar Thread, but at one point I made mention that my CL girl has greenish pigmentation in her legs. Someone had asked for closer pics. Here are some taken today:

How odd. I've never seen that in a Cream Legbar. I would not breed from that bird, it is very possible to be passed on to offspring even if it is only as a recessive gene.

Yes, I have noticed two pullets with spotted pigmentation in the shanks. I read study on it that I believe was done with RIR's (???) that said it was most common in pullets. I think it is triggered by the color modifier.
