Crazy question for the week...have you ever had a rooster with a terrible flop of a comb, heal itself? ie start to raise itself back to straight at 1 year old+?????? I had totally given up hope for Graphite who honestly looked like he had a red bang on his head. Now all of a sudden it's rising! I'm glad I held onto him 'just in case". Still not sure I'll use him since his rival has a perfect comb, but this is very interesting!

Don't know if this helps, KP, but these are all of the same cockerel.
His comb is a diagonal across the forehead...but I am astonished that most of the flop, he out grew.

@ Kathy: That's amazing to me! Graphite's was even worse than the flop in the last pic (ie. you couldn't see his eye on one side), but it's almost up to the angle in your first pic now!

Too much color hmm? Idk, but I myself think he's gorgeous

I said SOME might say too much color. Not me, nope. I like him just the way he is. I with you, he's gorgeous and I am jealous!! I am in the color camp! I would really not like our roos to be as pale and dare I say washed out as some of the UK roos I have seen.

That is EXCELLENT.

I've always liked Graphite...ever since baby pictures.

It is good that you kept him, and it is a lesson for everyone raising CLs that a very good rooster could be lost to too early evaluation!! Just think we could eventually develop a time line...when the comb straightens up for those who do.

Out of curiosity, is he the only rooster in his pen, or is he with younger roosters? I have a weird theory that a rooster without competition develops a bit differently than a rooster raised in a group of roosters. -- The solo guy HAS to step up one day and be the flock's rooster...and the multiples can let someone else do it....so only one develops to be dominant.

I also like the look of the CL to have a little more color, not too much though. But are we trying to stay away from that. They are supposed to be just cream right in the saddle and hackles is that correct. I see a lot of people saying they like the color of some of the more colorful CLs and give those people lots of encouragement that the roosters are good. So I get confused as to what we are working towards. Sorry Im new to trying to follow the SOP and still learning. Is a little color ok and allowed or are they supposed to be JUST cream.

Ironically it was when Graphite was with a flock of Silkie hens that his comb grew to enormous proportions and did it's Elvis flop. He had zero competition and actually got really mean, like attacking me and feather picking the girls. Then after a couple of months with two of Grey's sons in Freezer Camp the comb started rising. And he hasn't attacked me in at least the last month. Also, after the first day there have been no scuffles at all between the boys. Maybe he was dealing with a hormone overload.
