Cream Legbars

What lovely pullets, seeing your 9 week old has me convinced that my pullet is a lot younger than the 8 weeks I was told she was when I got her last sat, she is the same size as my 9 week old bantam chicks, here she is

she appears to be within a week or so of my 8 week pullets

I'm glad to hear it!

I actually found a local friend with a mature quad of Spitzhaubens that she decided she was ready to part with. I also picked up a few eggs from a breeder at a big poultry show a few hours away and have two nice cockerels from them, one is in with the ladies right now. I have a few chicks from them already! I'll make the pictures small so they don't clutter the thread too much. ;)

so beautiful, I really wanted some of these early on...but there's no room at the inn, and I have another broody hen...

I just started hatching a new generation and my first chick hatched a few days ago. She is a pullet and an only hatcher. Luckily I have a batch due to hatch in 2 days and them 2 more batches in the 2 weeks to follow.

So just so Im accurate when describing generations I might need clarification. I started with my "Starter Trio" and that is what I called them. Their offspring was MY First Generation. Then Males from my first generation crossed back to their mothers make offspring being my Second Generation. Is this correct? And does each new set of offspring from the previous offspring down the line count as a generation.

On the topic of breeding and generations I have another question. I currently have my small flock to work with. My starter cock was crossed to 2 hens to give me some offspring to grow out, then the starter cock was culled and I kept one of his sons as my main boy. My main cockerel is in a pen now with my 2 original hens (one is his mother Im not sure which) I will also include in that pen daughters of his and daughters of his brother(the brother was also crossed to the same original 2 hens) the second brother kept jumping the fence so because it wasnt controlled breeding Im not sure which daughters belong to which of the brothers. The second brother has also recently been culled.

In a second pen I was thinking of putting a Son from one of the brothers and put in the daughters of my Starter rooster(they are the sisters of my main boy and would be I guess Aunts of this new male. Im not 100% on how to pair up relation wise to get the best results so I am hoping this will give me the most options.

I really really wish I had a better idea of exactly who fathered and mothered each chick so I can get the maximum usage of genes without breeding too closely related. Id like to keep a closed flock for a while and don't want to end up with too much inbreeding.

I think I need to start banding with a color code to keep track of the relations to each other. I hope this makes sense any advice, tips or comments are welcome.
Hi Chicken pickin'

such a cute chick.....

Have you seen this reference?

I have a real question where I think that there may be an error - when they say 13/16 - I think it should be 15/16.... if it were 13/16 it would be less than the 7/8 and it should be more...anyone else see this - or explain to me why not. ;O)

It kind of shows that you can start with just two unrelated. I think I will have two lines of Cream Legbars that are unrelated - and for my Isbars since they are so inbred I will have 3-lines that are as unrelated as possible...thanks to Rinda and to Omega Hills Farms....

ETA, Okay, I see how they didn't arrive at 15/16 which would have been a pairing to a great-grandmother Perhaps their chicken(S) didn't stay in production long enough...... Anyone gotten this far?

I'd say around 7 weeks

I did start to review this thread from POST ONE and then realized this info is over two years old. So I am not being lazy, but I know experience, learning and such has to have made your answers different ..... ;)

I have three males - two are a browner barred and one is a whiteish barred - see that one below ... is there an accepted color difference like this ? and the one female I have is browner - more like the other pictures you have shared.

Golden ? Cream ? I don't want to breed for show or selling - so I really do not want to hear SOP lists ... I can look those up - I just want your real world experience on these color differences and how that may affect the genetics of what I have. Make sense ?

There is a lot of good information in all of the threads about Legbars on this site. You would probably benefit fom going back and reading all the information. There are a lot of good folks here that are working hard to get this breed recognized.

So here is 1 of my 13 boys. I like him the best because he has the least amount of chestnut color on his back. But it looks like he's not done yet.
I also like him because of his crest. I'll try to get more pics.
Hard to take when they all think I'm feeding FF, and start to swarm :)
