I only had a few to pick from, so yours were separated already from the ones I veiwed so I didn't get to see them   I believe one of your girls looks similar to the pullet I posted. How many are you getting? She told me she was shipping you out some birds, Ill be anxiously awaiting to see some pics of the ones you got.

I wanted a trio also but I went with a pair. I keep going back and forth in my mind and I might go back and see if I can get one more pullet. There was another pullet I liked also and I think I want her lol. We'll see, I will sleep on it.

I purchased some eggs on Ebay this past spring and two of the four hatched. There was one with a white spot on its head and one with chipmunk stripes. Male and Female right? The one with the white spot didn't make it more than a few days but the chipmunk lived and grew and grew and I thought to myself, my that is an awfully large comb for a female. She kept growing until one day I watched her pull her little head back and let out a beautiful frog like sound. Hmm, I thought, that is awfully strange for a hen to crow but it has been known to happen. Well a little more time went on and I couldn't help but notice she had pointy feathers around the base of her neck and her tail was very tall. Hmm, I thought, perhaps the chipmunk markings are supposed to be the males. It is awfully strange that the internet and every source I have spoken to has told me otherwise. Well yesterday I let my little chickies loose in the morning and watcher HER jump on one of my hens and try to breed. Well...am I insane or what?? Can anyone possibly shed some light on the subject for me?

Picked up my Rees pair this morn. Fingers crossed some good things come from them. I plan to keep my Rees line separate so I am definitely happy for the genetic diversity I can add later to my CL flock.

I just went through them. I have pictures of them hatching but they are all wet and poor quality. I noticed that after the hatch my ducklings must have been shipped to me because all of the photos are of baby ducks from then on. My husband and I both did a lot of research before we decided on this breed and I am certain the markings were clear. The only thing I could come up with is that the Ebay seller might have been dishonest in saying they were pure CCL eggs? I hate to think that but I really am confused by what has happened. Could the chick have been born with both genders and the testosterone is taking over?? I think I have gone crazy with ideas but none seem logical.

From what you are saying, it would be my first conjecture that there was some rooster hanky-panky. Often we suddenly think that the eBay seller was dishonest -but perhaps they were unaware, or they kept a Cream Legbar hen in a pen with multiple breeds and only pulled her out when it was time to begin collecting eggs---but they lost track of the time that viable sperm from a different rooster could still fertilize the hen's eggs.

Talking with a friend last night that claims that genetic abnormalities happen all the time in their flock - example: two non-crested parent birds will produce crested chicks. Since we think of the cresting gene as a dominant one, rather than recessive, this doesn't add up...

Anything is possible but somethings are more probable than others.

Hopefully you will be able to get some CL eggs for hatching from a 'breeder' - If you go to the Cream Legbar Club's website - there is a list by State of dues paying members of the Club who could supply you with hatching eggs or chicks.

Sorry that you went through the loss of one chick and the hormonal confusion of the other chick. It could be a pure Cream Legbar that had something happen in shipping that caused irregular development in the embryo - and resulted in the one that looked female but crowed.

With that said, we should remember that the male CL chicks can also have dorsal stripes - they are more diffused when compared with the females' stripes. Did you see the plate I posted of chick down from Punnett published in the 1930's? All the chicks both male and female show dorsal stripes.
