Im a little sad, my 3 young CL cockerels just get sent off to the processor. One of the cockerels was my absolute favorite type wise I was in love with his look but due to a defect in his comb I chose to cull I am really bummed. Along with them went 3 "older" Barred Rock hens. Its crazy how attached one becomes to chickens.

Im down to my one favorite CL cockerel to be next seasons breeder in my main flock, and one young Rees CL cockerel in the 2nd flock with Rees pullets and maybe a few of my own pullets also.

Im already itching to start hatching again lol. Anyone else already getting the hatching itch?

I also have Penedesencas... and they are quite rare. They come in five colors in the USA. Partridge, crele, wheaten, Emporanesa ( white), and black. I have mostly partridge but I do have one crele pullet and one white rooster whom I believe may be a "sport". I bought 7 of them from a hatchery as that is the only place I could find more at that time. Three, I bought from a local person, and they are fairly nice hens. I will have to play around to see what I can figure out on the Crele and on the white rooster as he is not a true white... has grey legs and faint yellow over his wings. I do know the Penedesenca is not an approved breed yet in the USA, but, there are people who want to make this happen. I hope that answers a few of the questions I saw posted earlier.

Welcome to Cream Legbars and thanks for the link the the pendesencaUSA site. So you are working with two breeds yet to gain APA acceptance...(me too)--- I really liked that site...what's the Wallaby doing there? -- LOL --

It is neat to notice how the Pendesencas are 1. white legs, 2. dark eggs, 3. honey eyes, 4. lighter in weight and 5. crestless -- so not difficult to differentiate from Cream Legbars they are more light weight right? noticably slimmer to look at? And -- the chicks -- how different are they. (too many questions?) --

Looking forward to your contributions to the threads.

sorry about your need to say good bye to one that you liked. The harder the culling the better the flock as sad as it is. Then again, it gives you more room to hatch more chicks.

I packed the incubators away until - maybe for a Christmas hatch, depending upon who is laying at that time -- unless one goes broody -- then the whole equation will change........ I have a full house and plan to sell some off on the 18th ...and then get some back around the 19th that are at threat of puppy dog danger where they are now-- Hope that they can make it past my clear out to the auction down the road........

Thanks! That is what made it not as bad, thinking of the future of the flock. I almost held one back as a back up since I keep getting this nagging feeling something could happen to my boy over winter. I sure hope not though. Im looking forward to seeing the results of next seasons breeding. Most of this years pullets are nearing point of lay so Im excited to hatch from them.

My DH just called me, I guess one of my CL cockerels escaped the cage at the processor and is on the run, sigh.
 
The cockerel looks good, but the pullets look a bit scraggly. I'm guessing they are about 2 1/2 months old. Their feathers are a bit picked on which is okay, but their wings are down just a bit, and, their face coloring isn't as bright as I would like it to be. They are supposed to be Greenfire offspring. No crests! They came from a warmer area, so it has been a temperature change for them as it is cooler here.

Any tips accepted!

I have no idea why the Wallaby is there... but he just might be a pet at someones farm.

Yes, I also have two breeds that need to gain APA approval.

The Penedesencas have two leg colors, I think. Grey and an off yellow. My white rooster that I think is a sport has the grey legs, not yellow, which is what he should have if he was the white variety. It is still possible he is a cross between two of the Penedesenca breeds though, so using him with some of my lesser PP's may give me a better idea of what he is. There are more colors of this breed in Spain, but they have not been imported, at least not yet. They say that the whites carry all the genes for all of the colors. Sounds like a fun project to me. There is a photo of a white bodied rooster with yellow neck hackles and a black tail. I think his saddle was yellow also. He is one handsome fellow.

Yes, they are a smaller bird, yet lay a large dark brown egg. Even the white variety lays dark brown eggs, though the wheatens often lay a slightly lighter egg. They eat less food too. My avatar is one of my older hens.. not old, just older. Her legs are what I think of as a medium dark grey.

The chicks are very similar to the Cream Legbar being in the partridge color, and probably the wheatens also. When hatched, the pullets have full back and head barring and the cockerels have a lighter colored head and body with less barring. I've read that you can pretty much color sex them, but so far all I have hatched is Partridge Pennedesenca crosses with Black Copper Maran as I did not have a PP rooster. (On my, I am so glad that BCM rooster sold easily and is gone. He was a bit nasty to deal with.) The cross bred hens are very nice looking, and so was the rooster, before he got clobbered on the head by a 2x4 that fell down. He was in the wrong spot at the wrong time last weekend. The hens and I still miss him. <sigh>
