Cream Legbars

I've been reading the conversation about uneducated or unscrupulous sellers with interest. I think it is an unfortunate fact in the animal world and really in all aspects of any marketplace. Some people are unethical and some people just don't know or care enough to educate themselves.

As a newbie buyer I did not do enough to educated myself when I bought, but I got fairly lucky and ended up with some middle of the road stock. At least they are recognizable CL and I have something to work with. I understand the excitement of just going out and there and purchasing, but in my opinion it should always be buyer beware. You can't control what the sellers put out there you can only control what you spend your money on. And I am not saying that in judgement of anyone that gets swindled or not what what they are hoping since I did exactly the same thing!

Perhaps because it is a "new" breed and because things are still in development but I have other breeds and by far this CL group on BYC has been the most welcoming and the most educational. Thanks everyone!
Know what BBS? I first thought that we had more control on the hatches than we may actually have.... LOL -- For the first time last year I hatched out two chicks that are not 'to type' -- It is interesting because I must be bringing out recessives -- I had one little female that had some outside feathers on her shanks... they have just about fallen off now -- but as pretty as she is in appearance -- she isn't 'to type' -- and from my Dec. 30th hatch I have a little female that at 4-weeks is NOT showing salmon in her breast-feathers. This is a first for me -- I'm pretty much home-free on autosexing - and straight/upright combs, though not perfect quite yet, all my hatchlings since 2012 have nice crests -- and I have been really pleased with the color of the plumage, the colors of the eggs, and the production rate of the eggs.... I'm one of the older CL raisers here -- I've been around since 2012 -- when we really got started here on BYC with the breed--- But since as you said the breed is 'new' - some surprises are going to pop up. (Like where in the world did I get a recessive feather-leg gene?????? LOL)

I think that the only thing that we can guarantee for certain is that if someone were to get a 'non-standard' CL from me I would fully refund their purchase price. You could tell somethings by the results of the pairings in the past, and you could tell some things on day-old chicks---but my little chick that had the feathers on shanks -- didn't show up for awhile. Especially since I am getting a lot of requests for chicks... all I can do IMO - is offer a refund and refer them to the past results from the specific parent birds. My 'non-standard' are such surprises to me. they are from line-breeding which I just started this year...and I won't probably provide any line-bred chicks or eggs to anyone unless they are aware that these recessives could pop up. All the eggs and chicks I will provide in the spring will be from known pairs -- but sometimes the unexpected can happen....

Have you ever seen anything like this in a CL??

As you say we are a new breed--- and there are some really interesting 'hidden' genetics in the mix. This is not to excuse the ETA - looks like I hit submit before finishing the thought - Unexpected genes doesn't excuse the mistaking of male for female - but I think that Chamber 94 was right about the theory of the ones she sent missing headspots -- and so it could have been that -oooops! - honest mistake.......

It is pretty amazing that GFF Jill Rees line cockerels are 19.00/ea at present and the females are 29.00 --- also their website says that they are phasing out the previous lines. I guess those of us that have the 'old lines' really need to hold on to them for genetic diversity.
BTW when the Cream Legbar Club just started we had discussed a pedigree database for the very purpose of maintaining diversity -- and I think I will be starting one so we can keep track of the lines into the future and who has what genetics.

If you have interest and or expertise PM me.

I wish you luck finding them all homes and I really cant wait for you to post some pictures of these cockerels. I only know what my one Rees male looks like so I love seeing others.

Im not too sure you will get $160 per cockerel at this point it might be a little steep. As ChicKat mentioned above Greenfire currently is only hatching and selling the Rees line and cockerel chicks are only $19 and Female chicks are $29.

Its a bummer that a short time ago CL were so costly. But now with the lowered prices many more folks can start raising this breed also which is nice.

Quote: Yes. It is quite amazing. Thankfully, mine are grown and already breeding. They're quite gorgeous and compared to other lines, much nicer quality. It is not surprising to me that they are only focusing on this line now. I do have several lines of hens from them. I only kept the best looking hens (which ended up with 5 hens out of those lines) and I plan to have 1 pen of pure Jill Rees as well as 1 pen of the other lines hens with a nice Rees roo over them. So, I'd be very interested in diversity.

I am soooo very excited today! I found my first Rees egg!!!

She must have laid it yesterday.

Beautiful Chicken Picken!!! I love the color. It might not be perfectly blue but it is still a scrumptious color.

Aloha,

About the wrongly sexed cockerels. In my limited knowledge of Cream Legbars, I will have to say without a doubt that the first and third cockerels are part Cream Legbar at best. They are not pure Cream Legbar. Thatʻs not choosing the wrong birds to breed, thatʻs choosing the wrong breeds to breed! And thatʻs the reason why the autosexing went bad.

The worst thing is the seller didnʻt make it good. We all make mistakes but if we do, we have to make it good. Period.

ʻnuff said.

Aloha, Puhi
