Hello! I am finally seeing an increase in eggs. Today there were 4! I put my cockerel in with the ladies 2 days ago I was a little nervous but they greeted him like an old friend. He has a nicer body type and tail angle than the rooster I had last year. I have a wait list for eggs and have been waiting for the winter slow down to end.



The coops are so muddy after our recent rainstorms.

Looking forward to more pics! The pic is rather far but from what I can see I like your male, I also cant really see the hens well through the fence so I do hope you will post a few more pics of them soon

My girl is about 5 months, and her comb and wattles have grown exponentially in the last week or so. She still seems very small, but this is my first time with the breed. Could she be close to laying?

Wow her comb is very large! She looks to be getting close, though she may hold out for another month or more. With you being in CA the weather is nicer so I hope she lays for you soon.
Look for signs of her pecking at free choice oyster shell if you offer it, squatting, or checking out nest boxes. When you start seeing that the egg will be soon to follow.

Here are a couple more and an egg! I found 4 eggs yesterday but only one today but it is a beauty. Being a little farther north, we have to wait a little longer for the girls to get started.

Thanks! I wasn't expecting it so soon (my last May hatch girl FINALLY started laying 2 weeks ago), but I will be very happy to see this little lady in the nesting boxes!

Do you have any cockerels? Usually my girls start laying within one week of the roosters paying attention to them for the first time. Your pullet looks ready to go!

I just processed my only guys last week - no roosters allowed in my city My Fav roo was crowing a little and tidbitting all day long... while my stupid fluffybutt bantam cochin roo plucked everyone's feathers and tried to steal as much food as he could. Maybe having the boys around helped her along, though!

I agree that she is probably very, very close. Most CLs lay the first egg at just about 24 weeks. I have a cream Legbar pullet hatched the end of last September in the same pen with a pullet that is a hybrid Cream Legbar male X Isbar female -- and in that little nest box - I was surprised to find this yesterday:

dunno if this attempt is the hybrid or the CL -- I suspect the cross -- but it is an example of the chicken's owner not supplying oyster shell early enough.

. So be sure that you pick up on that advice from chicken pickin. I usually try to worm the pullets before eggs start up too (Depends on if you use a regular worming schedule)---- Just another sign of spring - and this egg to add to their feed this morning. That shell is so fragile that it is like paper-thin.

LOve that egg color -- that is gorgeous!

ETA - it is large too -- is that a pullet egg or a hen starting up after molt. Do you weigh eggs? I'm curious about the size you have there.
