Once again, I agree with Chicken picken. BTW The egg is a beautiful color!!! And the breeder's birds look nice
-
however, it would have been nice if the breeder had told you that your chickens would be crestless.
If you get a crested rooster with two cresting genes--- the chicks you hatch should have crests - and you could sell them as Cream Legbars - but it would be, IMO very forthright to tell any buyers that they
all would have only 1 cresting gene.
Some folks only want autosexed chickens so if they live in the city and no roosters are allowed - they won't get a rooster by mistake.. and they will get blue eggs, for that market your chicks should be fine. Some people want to hatch eggs that they get from their Cream Legbars and if anyone were to buy from you - with that in mind--- they should have full disclosure. --
Wouldn't it have been very nice if the breeder that you bought from had gone to the trouble of getting crests on the chicks that would hatch from the eggs sold? you wouldn't be facing this issue if that had been the case.
In the next version of the SOP - it will probably state in the wording that it is a DQ to have a Cream Legbar without a crest. It is already a DQ - because the breed is listed as crested and lacking that characteristic will DQ (disqualify) the bird in a show. But sometimes that factor got overlooked.
It is helpful to all of us that you brought this up-- because it is a reality in the breed. Everyone who hatches them needs to work to improve the breed IMO - -- People need to know that the breed is a work in progress. Since every CL in the USA came from GFF - that isn't an automatic ticket to good Cream Legbar -- It is a bit like a canvas and a box of paints -- but it is also up to everyone of us that raises the breed to raise the standard as we do so. There have actually been enough generations of CL in the USA -- GFF released the first ones in late 2011 - There have been enough generations that we shouldn't be seeing crestlessness IMO.
What do others think about this issue? I'm congratulating Debs55 for bringing it up for discussion - and I am a hard-liner on this one because I think it is very important.
