At least you won't have to worry about next year. I hate frostbite. We got lucky this year and mine only lost the very tip of one point. Of course our winter was one of the mildest winters we have ever experienced. Makes rose combs more and more appealing.

Here is a pullet that is roughly 7months old that I have been holding on to. About 3months ago my plan was to cull her because her head just looked too odd for me and her eye placement seemed off, some of you may recall this discussion. Well I decided to keep her around and see where she went as she matured. As she has grown she has matured into her head a little bit, the head is still slightly different than the other CLs I would say she has a wide head and long face/beak and her eye is still slightly forward.

There has just been something about her other than her head that I am really digging. I cant quite place why I like her so much but here are a few things I can note. I love her cream hackles and crest, she has great back length and her size is quite large, she is much bigger (taller and longer, I bet she weighs a bit more also) than her hatchmate sister. Also her breast has always been free of the black ticking

What she is lacking though is the cooler gray body tone and she is also lacking defined barring(though she does have some fantastic barring in her wings and nice stippling (I will have to get a wing pic).

I think I am going to do some test mating between her and my main cock posted aboth with the new buzz cut (who is either her father or her uncle Im not positive) Once she starts laying that is, she is getting close.

This is the pullet. Feel free to comment good and bad..

This next pullet is the opposite of her sister I posted above. What I like about her is she has a very nice cool gray body color and she also to me has nice visible barring even in her tail feather, these are traits the pullet above lacks.

What this pullet bellow lacks is the nice buttery creamy hackles and light crest that I am looking for, she also has lots of black ticking on her breast (that I hope she will molt out of). Her size is ok though I wish she was a little longer and taller and her tail angle used to be lower though now it has gone up a bit. Her earlobes are ok but they look like they might end up with red leakage which I do not want with in my flock.

I will also test breed this pullet to see if I can use her to bring forth the gray body coloring and barring into some of the future off spring.

I wonder if offspring from this pullet and from the pullet above bred back together would make some decent offspring considering they bath have what the other lack. Hmmm....

Her is the second pullet I saved to possibly join the flock, not the best by any means but displays some good qualities in my opinion. Again all comments welcome, good and bad..

Question about CLB incubating and hatching. (especially shipped eggs)

I've heard that dry incubating CLB (ambient humidity) seems to produce better hatch rates.

Also some say you should always hatch shipped eggs in cut down egg cartons but Ive also been told that if the eggs touch each other that the chicks encourage each other to hatch.

I've had poor luck in my last batches of CLB eggs. (different problems each time) Im considering getting some more eggs (hopefully hand delivered) and looking to get better results.

I tried hatching shipped CL eggs in cut down and side cut out (hopefully for good air flow) egg cartons and had a very poor hatch. It was the poorest hatch rate I have ever had so don't think I would try that again.

It may not have been anything to do with the carton per se.

I find any handling/candling in the last 3 days results in much poorer hatch of fully developed chicks.

I always hatch in paper cartons (they go in on day 18) and get great hatch rates.

CL eggs seem to be picky about specific temps and humidity, everyone seems to report different results of there egg hatches. Lately I have heard many people mention that dry incubating(low humidity) is the way to go. I have a batch of CL eggs in now on day 18 and I am doing a dry hatch the humidity is staying roughly around 21-24%. So far all the eggs are looking great, now I just need them all to make it to hatch day.

It is often said that shipped eggs should be left to settle for 24hrs before you set them in the incubator. I have also read many times that once you set them in the incubator to have them standing upright the entire duration. If the air cells look bad like they are detached or saddled many people wont even turn the eggs for the first few day of the incubation to allow the air cells more time to settle and reattach. That way they are still settling but you aren't losing the eggs freshness by waiting. I hope this makes sense. Then most people will also hatch in the carton upright.

Many people prefer many different techniques, I suppose it is all personal preference. Oh and eggs don't need to touch each other to have a good hatch. I purposefully keep my eggs untouching lol Im not sure why.

I thought I would add my opinion on hatch rates . I feel it is from inbreeding . We need to ask flying monkey about his rates on the rose comb project . With a shot of new blood I think his rates are very good . I always keep a diverse gene pool for vigor and production . New to this breed but I will be adding new blood when I get the chance .
