Cream Legbars

Think you may have one of each at this point the feather patterns are different. Still could be mixes too. The chicks do look different from each other too. Either way I think you should inform the seller and the breeder with pictures maybe the breeder will have insight based on the pics of the birds. Show day olds and now.

I've messaged Omega Hills through their FB page and did not get a response. When I contacted the person I got them from, she replied with something to the effect of "it doesn't seem like you've been happy with these chicks from the start. ( I had contacted her after many of you on here said they did not have the appropriate female auto sexing marks) Would you like me to take them back?" When I said yes, since she offered, I'd like to do that the person basically said I can't just change my mind because I didn't get show quality chicks. It's been a frustrating transaction. It was my first time buying what I thought was pure bred chicks from a breeder and I've learned a ton from it.

I think I would respond the following way.

"Our earlier communications may have gotten us off on the wrong foot. At this point,I'm writing to you to give you feedback on the development of the chicks I purchased from you. After several weeks of development the confusion over gender in these chicks has not lessened. Sexing chicks in most breeds is imperfect at best and odd things do happen even with experienced people. CLB however are supposed to be easily sexable at hatch, thus them being an autosexing breed. However after showing pictures to other breeders and reading a great deal about this breed of birds it is clear that at least in this line of birds either of 2 things is going on 1) the autosexing feature of these birds is being lost. (This is reported to be happening in England) or 2 the line is not pure (not saying it is intentionally so) I'm providing pictures of their development so that you are informed of the future challenges this line of birds is facing so people can be informed and good choices be made in breeding future birds. While at least one of these is now reading female I'm hopeful for lovely colored eggs in the future. "

Sorry you have had to go through such a negative buying experience. A reasonable and honest seller would admit to their mistakes and make it right, even if they didn't want to take the chicks back you should get a refund in my opinion. It sounds to me that this seller might not be an experienced Cream Legbar owner or breeder and maybe truly doesn't know what to look for and thinks they do. To them Im sure you sound like the problem and they might be failing to realize that it might just unknowing to themselves that is the cause.

Wow Chris, you said all that so well. Kern

I am relatively new to chickens (two years), but not new to animals. I have raised, bred and sold Irish sport horses and champion Labradors for years. I have discussed it with many people, but have yet to figure out why fraud, dishonesty, and deception are seemingly commonplace with those who deal in animals. I suspect that unlike a traditional brick-and-mortar retail enterprise, it doesn't take as much personal investment to buy a couple of animals, let them do what comes naturally, and then throw an ad up on Craigslist or a hobby-related forum, use a couple of good buzz words, and take advantage of the endless stream of newbies. Whether it's reptiles, chickens, dogs, cats, or horses, there is always a new "hot" breed or color that everyone wants, and the unscrupulous can misrepresent. Plus, given the long-arm distance of the internet, the hucksters can continuously change names and identities and enjoy the constant stream of naive folks who think that everyone out there is as good-hearted and well-intentioned as they are.

I have dealt with the large popular breeders (perhaps the largest), and have been treated extremely poorly, due in no small part to the fact that even if I get so disgusted I withdraw my business (as I did), it matters little, because of endless line of customers behind me who will gladly jump into my spot to obtain the new imported breed. I have also dealt with the small-scale individuals who flat out lie and send poorly-packaged boxes of barely-packaged feces-covered eggs that all turn out to be clear (seriously, is there even a rooster in there with those hens?) as they take my money and laugh all the way to the bank, knowing that no matter how much attention I may try to call to them on forums such as this, they will always find new suckers to dupe.

My only salvation has been the true hobbyists on this forum who have shown me that not everyone is a complete shyster. Folks like ChicKat and others, who simply want folks like me to get the same enjoyment out of these birds as they do, and extend grace from the bottoms of their hearts to do so, and help a relative newcomer like myself to not simply throw my hands up in the air and walk away from the entire hobby because of the crooks. One day, if I have birds that warrant it, I will reach out to the newbies and show them the kindness I have been shown. That's the only way to repay it - by paying it forward.
