That was a "fresh" / clean brooder =)
I can almost see those CL babies moving around, they all look so alert.
Do the silkies have different characteristics that are noticeable when you combine them with other breeds, such as the CL?
Maybe the way they walk/waddle or peck or sit or? Their stance seems to be a little different?
As you can tell, I've never had silkies…

haha yes it was I had just finished cleaning it lol and no not really the silkie babies just hang out. They were all attacking the food bowl because I had just cleaned it. You know not like it didn't have food in it all day any way lol There is 5 CLBs, 6 white silkies and 1 mottled Java in there

Cleaning brooders, cleaning coops, they are always curious aren't they? It actually encourages me to get the chores done because they are so enthusiastic to try the "new" whatever - food, water, shavings…it's the simple things =) And they are usually good company during the process.

I love the down patterns on mottled chicks. I think that is why CL are so interesting also.

Hi caychris. Its called ebc--for e buttercup.

Here is a breakdown of the down patterns from http://www.edelras.nl/chickengenetics/mutations1.html
"Below are the E locus genes.
Genes: E, ER, ER- Fay, eWh, e+, eb, es, ebc, ey, eq
Gene names: Extended Black, Birchen, Fayoumi Birchen, Dominant Wheaten, wild type, Brown, Speckled, Buttercup, Recessive Wheaten, Queen Silvia
Phenotypes: Black, Brown Red, Brown Red, Wheaten, Black breasted Red (salmon breasted hens), Brown (brown breasted hens), Speckled, Buttercup, Clay Wheaten, Queen Silvia.
* note: "ER- Fay" is not recognised nomenclature for the Fayoumi Birchen allele, only used here for short hand purposes. Smyth (1994) listed a Birchen allele as ERB, the RB standing for "red-brown downed birchen". Possibly this is the Birchen allele found in Fayoumi fowl."


My experience is that eb has quite a lot of variation in the patterning depending on the breed and so may have some spotting but not as leopard-like as the ebc. The one shown above has a traditional brown cap and darker brown face. Many eb breeds have other genetics like penciling that may change the look. Some have chipmunk stripes, some have a lighter face with a V (that resembles e+) and may have some darker face spots. The adult males look to my eye like e+ but the females will have a brown (or grey if they are dilute) breast.

They are listed in the above descriptions in decreasing order of dominance--so if you have a eWh/e+ chick, it supposedly will have more of a wheaten look than an e+ look, but in my flock they end up looking like a diluted (yellowish background) wildtype with thinner V/stripe and only a small amount of eyeliner.

I have a e+/eb chick and she shows the face spots of the eb and her breast is mostly grey at 5 weeks with just a tiny amount of salmon blush coming through--She's 1/4 Dark Brahma and 3/4 Legbar;

Speckled Sussex also have a chipmunk type down as chicks. I can distinctly tell them apart from my EEs and CLBs
