I need my dog here..... Hate to think of her out there all alone against them -- I need to get a companion for her.... there you go! -- Have had tracks of cougar -- and that has kept me from bringing her away from the ranch among other things. I bet she would go after anything (ACD- I've seen her after a 2,000 pound bull) -- but maybe a cougar would just keep away if it knew a cattle dog/working dog was here........

ChickKat I'm so sorry about your losses. Have you tried the electric netting? I'm getting ready to put some up out at the barn coop. Something came through a couple of weeks ago - I think it was a neighbor's dog, and killed some EEs and all of my Isbars except for my black Isbar roo. (Only ate a couple, played with and killed the rest.)

Then I locked some young Marans and a couple of CL culls (crooked toes) up in the barn coop that has a chain link run and something else came through and pulled some through the fence. Which was completely freaky. Now I have my chain link run fortified by hardware cloth and so far so good, but I want them to get out and free range so I'm going to try the netting. And then I expect I'll have hawk losses so I'll have to figure out something on that. It's always something.

Oh I'm so sorry to hear that you went through that.

Yes, I do have electric poultry netting and the energizer -- and I'm having trouble getting the fence electrified. My intent is to only turn on the electric at night -- because the chickens are really good at staying inside during the day. It's so easy on the Premier 1 video... I may have my grounding stake in too sandy of soil to complete the circuit -- I can't think of what else. DRAT -- time on Monday to be spent with customer support.

I have chain link and the bottom few feet are clad in hardware cloth -- this guy dug UNDER in a place where I hadn't put skirting - (kick my self)--- and seemed to just kill the Isbar without eating it- but it looks like it dragged it through the dirt a lot -- perhaps it was trying to take it home to the family and couldn't get both itself and the chicken out the hole it dug itself in via - then up the 6 foot chain link in the courtyard were a couple of pens open so they can alternate that space -- It did just kill it -- but lucky for me I still have 2 Isbars left. The other one got herself out of the poultry netting when the rains were so heavy that the end of the fence sagged open, Particularly devistating because these were some of the original Isbars, the small highly productive --(Little chickens big big eggs daily) with the black-looking eyes - that you can't even get anylonger -- because of the out-crossed types with lighter eyes available now.

Oh my that sounds just awful. So sorry you had all those loses.

I put some 1' x 1' heavy paving squares from Home Depot along the edge of the coop and it has completely stopped digging. And it seems so much easier than putting the skirting down. My skirting always got bent and stuck up in places and was a mess. Every time I went to the coop I'd trip over part of it, scare the chickens and then have to wash my own mouth out with soap.

I just checked my incubator that has 24 Barred Plymouth Rock eggs and I have some rocking eggs!!! Im so excited!

I put some 1' x 1' heavy paving squares from Home Depot along the edge of the coop and it has completely stopped digging. And it seems so much easier than putting the skirting down. I put those 1x1 pavers on the ends and in the middle -- my exterior is 20x40 feet Does that mean I would need 120 1'squares at $1.68 ea would be --- $201 just for raccoons... In then end flat hw cloth 2' out was less costly - and although I value my chickens no end. I'm a cheap skate. (and paid with loosing two chickens.) I have lined that 'wall' of the courtyard as you describe (just 10')

The pavers that you have gives a better appearance IMO...maybe I will move that way-- I still have some areas that could be dug -- but now everything is inside electric netting fence...and I'm hoping that will protect them -- (cha Ching).

Day 20. The one that has pipped is a non Rees with the great air cell. Pipped right where he should be. I am crossing my fingers for a cockerel. Never thought I would say that lol.

Good luck on your BR's! I love that breed too and have considered getting into them. The non hatchery ones that I have seen are gorgeous birds.
