Cream Legbars

@chicken pickin
 - do your white sport pullets look like this?  This example looks more like my cockerels…?

I don't have whites in my flock so I am unfamiliar with them, I was just taking a guess. It looked like it had a more chipmunk pattern which prompted me to say pullet. I suppose I shouldn't answer if Im not sure lol I apologize.

The while head splotch is pretty clear in person. I don't see chipmunk stripes, which is why I think it is a he. Either way, just askin' if anyone else has seen these?

Yes these have been seen, they come from CL parents that carry the recessive white gene. When 2 carriers are paired together sometimes both parents will pass the gene and the result will be a pure white Cream Legbar. Both males and females grow up with pure white feathers and females will lay blue eggs. Some stock of the earlier lines of CL carry this recessive white gene. Some people like the whites, while others don't. If you want to learn more about them you can read up a little on the thread I will post below. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/827877/white-sport-cream-legbars

Yes, I have had them recently in my flock, and other breeders do too.
This example does look more like a boy to me. I can post some pics of pullets/cockerels if needed.

No apology required, I was just wondering if you had a different experience. It's nice to have other resources to compare to.

That would be appreciated. Do you have pictures of adults?

Hi all, I'm new here, but not new to chickens. I've 4 chickens, but 2 are Cream Legbars I bought together as eggs from My Pet Chicken. Both are hens, about 2 1/2 years now.

Health, housing, feed are good: A handful of worms for a breakfast treat, they all free range on pretty barren land, so I supplement with kale for greens when it's on clearance at the market. They have oyster shell free choice, and a basic balanced lay pellet. No scraps other than weeds or greens because there's really nothing for them to scavenge in their area. (New house, no landscaping yet)

One hen has a lighter color face and neck feathers, the other hen has a darker face and neck. Both have floppy combs, same body coloring, and white ears. The lighter hen is friendly, personable, and lays pretty consistently all year except for the darkest days of winter.

The darker hen remains very standoffish even today and won't be bribed with worms. Her comb and wattles are suspiciously roo looking. She has grown very long spurs, and does her best to crow in the morning. She also is prone to laying shell-less eggs, most often while still asleep on the roost, as I find them splatted below in the morning. One day she dropped an egg while walking around and didn't even seem to notice. Every now and then she lays a 'proper' egg in a nest, but it's pretty random when she will grace me with a hard shell egg.

Given the spurs, crowing, and odd laying problems, I kind of wonder if the genetics of this breed aren't too stable. Has anyone else had this problem? Could it be the source, or the breed? I would love to hear your thoughts.

Hi ChezPoulez2 - glad you have come to the thread.

Your hen sounds like she may have hormone issues - I guess crowing or attempting to would be the tip off . There are unknown genetics in Cream Legbars - but I never hear regularly of females attempting to crow, soft shells and spurs. I think that from time to time this pops up in all breeds of chicken

Soft shell layers will self-select out of the gene pool for the future.

I have a hen with spurs...although not desirable - not considered a big deal in the UK where Cream Legbars originate (I think it knocks off 1/2 point in the Poultry show) and considered desirable on females of some breeds, one of them is game fowl if I understand correctly. Despite spurs she is a good layer.

Once I had one that had difficulty producing a shell. She was a Craigslist purchase, and I suspect that the person from whom I bought her and two others gave the chicks no nutrition after they were out of the brooder, and expected that they would get all their nourishment from free ranging. In the case of mine it could have been nurture not nature.

Since this one of yours hasn't endeared herself to you -- you could eliminate her from your flock.
