Cream Legbars

RedBanks, yes down color does not determine final grays, creams, golds, etc. But it does seem to predict amount of excess red pretty well. Any red/cinnamon across the head, shoulders and back is a pretty accurate prediction of lots of autosomal red. My cockerels with no red down still develop chestnut shoulders barred with cream, but any chicks with red down have ended up in the middle or closer to the Gold Crele Variety in coloring. You may find over time that certain chicks develop attributes you prefer.

Wow, your light cockerel certainly shows king of the roost attitude already, doesn't he?

They're so cute!

Yes.... he has quite the attitude! Thinks he is cock of the walk!

Now I am looking at them closer. Some have quite a bit of red. The very dark and the very light show no red, it is the middle shade that shows red. The light colored ones are very fawn and are the smallest chicks. They are finer looking, like porcelain versus pottery. You can tell I am a newbie!

So my chicks may not look like CCL, they will look instead like Gold Crele Legbars?

I think I read that chick color has nothing to do with adult color on CCL. My babies came in three colors, light, medium and dark. They are two weeks old today and feathering out. The palest boy has the palest barring. Will all of this change?

Here are some of them..... could they get any cuter? The blonde boy is the bravest and loves the camera!

Your babies are beautiful. I also have 3 different color chicks. The very light one is amazing.

Thank you! You can see those tiny little crests coming..... it looks like a little patch of mowed grass. When I took these pictures I left the top door open. I turned around and babies were flying everywhere! The pen is 2 feet high. They are agile! Was it you that said they run away and then run back to you..... that is what mine do.

The pics you showed are very characteristic of cream Legbar chicks. I wouldn't worry about it, and they are definitely worth growing out :D if the saddle feathers come in bright orange or the shoulders come in solid red/chestnut, then you might be dealing with gold Legbar coloring, an inbetweener (between cream and gold coloring), or merely an excess of autosomal red. Again, your chicks are adorable and I don't see anything that would concern me :)

P.S. Crested is not part of the breed or variety name ;)

I am glad to hear they are characteristic..... I bought them from GFF because I wanted to get a good start. I have never bred chickens but showed and bred Bouviers years ago. I understand how to follow a standard but it takes time to understand the nuances. Asking questions, listening to experienced breeders and studying available information is the only way I know to gain the knowledge I need.

That is the perfect way to learn! (And what a lot of us do too) Best wishes with your beautiful flock!

I'm so excited! Originally, I won an auction for 12 random chicks from Greenfire Farms but when I talked to Josette, I told her about how much I love their Cream Legbars. She ended up giving me 5 extra female Rees Cream Legbars.. as long as 2 extra Bielefelders, 7 extra Swedish Flower Hens, and 2 extra Swedish Black Hens. That's a total of 28 chicks and I only paid $165 plus $35 for shipping. Everyone else would be jumping for joy - and trust me, I am.. but I cannot possibly have that many chicks! I don't know what to do now. Currently, I have a total of 17.. now with the 28.. that'll just be too much. I guess I'm just going to sell the chicks. If anyone is in Southern California and can drive to area code 91706 - I will be selling at least 2 female Cream Legbars for only $15! I'm not posting in the BUY~SELL~TRADE section yet because they have not made it here so there may be some casualties. Please PM me if interested and I will keep you updated through PM!

Oh man, and I thought *I* had chicken math bad.

I wish I was closer - the Swedish Flower Hens and Svart Hona are on my drool list... (As if *I* need more chicks.)

So, what is your outdoor housing plan for all these chickens?! Have you built your coop yet? (I'm building my second one!!!!)

If I was closer I would take you up on the offer as I'm hoping to get some more CL up to breeding age for next year... The last two dozen shipped CL eggs I set this season were/are not as fruitful as I would have liked so I'm still on the hunt for more eggs before winter fully sets in...
