Cream Legbars

Excellent information, and thanks for posting.

also big CONGRATULATIONS are due to you for the fabulous cockerel that was placed first by APA judge in the facebook contest. ( Since most aren't facebook users - you can see the winner if you go to the CL Club's website- and click on Show winners - It is item 11 in the left navigation bar)

Sometimes all the focus goes on color - btw - as most CL owners are fairly new chicken fanciers -- and the really important aspects of type are lost. The examples of the show winners have beautiful color of course -- and they display IMO the far (far far far) more important aspect - of correct type. -- Interestingly - beginners (and this goes with some other kinds of livestock as well - ) beginners focus on color because it is easy to relate to when we lack the expertise of knowing what makes good type. -- I think it the uk color is 20% of the entire score of the chicken - but the way discussions go -- you would think it was 100%.

At anyrate -- big Congratulations on the winning cockerel -- and congrats also go to Michael Baker for winning pullet - and to the CL Club's German member Jeannine Hölzel, with the winning hen.... Good job one and all - with your Cream Legbar chickens.

Thanks for the photos BBs - your chickens look fantastic. --

Really good insights too about the melanization. in your top picture, the feathers really DO show lacing.
Thanks Chickat for the congrats. I think he is a good example of type and not the ideal for color (imo). My goal is to focus on both type and color. It is very hard not to think about color because it is so obvious. I think I just take what I can get and try to make the most of it. At this rate I will be doing this a very long time but I am enjoying it!

I was having a really hard time hatching shipped eggs this year so I ended up purchasing two pullet chicks from Papa's poultry. They are only about 3 weeks old but so far they look like CLB

I am not able to get chicks from Greenfire because of a dry ice route issue or I would have gotten some Rees line pullets from them.

Hello Everyone,

Hope ya'll had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I have a question about combs. I have three cockerels (Jill Rees lines) 8 week olds. All have s combs. I have read the standard but could use an explanation of combs, problems..... etc. If anatomy causes this..... how do I fix it?

I am one of those new people you have welcomed so you are obliged to answer my uneducated questions!

Thanks!
Hi RedBanks, I think the consensus is that male combs are crooked because of the crest. Often the smaller the crest the straighter the comb.

I have males with very small (sometimes too small/nearly non-existent) crests and they have large straight combs. I also have a problem with passing decent crests to offspring and have had some offspring with no crests at all so there is always give and take!

*Just edited all the combs to crests!

Thanks.... these chicks had big crests early and the smallest crested cockerel has the straightest comb but still not a straight comb. It is pouring down rain so no pics today but I will get some and post. I really like these CLs.

See my two pretty legbar hens? They are so sweet and soft, love them!

Oh, they're lovely! They look a lot like my girls (mine are soft as well - I got in a good cuddle this evening, they love being held like footballs). Dumbledore (their flock cockerel) was very polite, but obviously wanted me to put them down and get out of there so everyone could go to bed... So I relented.

Hi

That chicken on the far right is a Gold Brabanter rooster. Isn't he wild looking? He doesn't have his full adult coloring yet as these chickens are 5 months old.

L to R are 4 hens: Tolbunt Polish frizzle, cream legbar, polish I was told was Tolbunt but wonder if gold laced or a mix, cream legbar... Then the lone rooster.

They are all very tame and friendly. They are fun to watch and have different personalities.

The Gold Brabanter rooster is friendly when we can catch him, ha! My DH named him Road Runner because that's how he looks when he runs and he seems to think of we catch him, he's through! He has long legs, think dinosaur, ha! But once on my lap, he stretches out for a nap, sometimes drapes his long neck on my arm.

The legbars are soft and sweet and wNt in our laps, they are so beautiful and when they start laying will give us blue eggs! Neat!

Then the two Polish. We haven't named the hens yet though have a few ideas. The dark headed one is more shy and funny how she bobs and shakes her head, she stands so tall to peer under her headdress! The frizzle follows the others and doesn't see as well ...she settles down on our laps and her frizzled feathers are so soft. The picture does not do her justice, she is beautiful and different.

It is fun to watch them all together and interacting.

Love the beautiful cream legbar hens from your flock's eggs! They are becoming more pretty too.vths is the lighter one with larger crest. The darker one has smaller crest. This is the lighter one and was on the right in first picture.
