Wowo, I missed a lot.

I raise the chicks in the house. We have them in the dining room. They are flighty as youngsters even. My wife and I cannot believe how flighty they are.

I even lost a white sport just changing water for them. They stampeded. My adult birds are about like guinea fowl, semi-domesticated.


We feed them treats, have Chicken TV time with them and they just will not tame down. I know another person that got some from the same flock as I got my originals and she says the same thing..




Now about that chick, I vote girl. With the chipmunk stripes as diluted as that ones is, there would be a HUGE yellow/white spot on the head if it was a male.


Hold it up and see if it dangles it's feet or pulls them in...

It could also be genetic - Paula was super friendly, and all of her chicks have been extra friendly as well...

Temperament is something that is supposedly hereditary. I try and mix my flighty birds with calm and friendly birds so they learn the behavior. Some will still be that way but the others can have a calming influence especially if the friendly ones are equal or out number the flighty ones. the more flighty birds together the more they feed off the others.

We had 3 CLB chicks raised with 3 Pita pintas and 4 buff orps 2 of them boys and 1 girl. the girl isnt lap friendly like the others but she definitely isnt flighty either. If im slow about it I can pick up my CLB girl without fuss. He will occasionally get it in her head that either me or my daughter should be her throne and climb up to shoulder or head then imperiously observe all the other chickens.

I should probably add that I have no desire to make these birds pets, and I don't generally handle them a lot as adults. I just don't want them so scared of me that I can't care for them if they're sick, or put them back up if they get out of their paddock... And they were all so jumpy during brooding that I wanted to regain some ground before they get too old.

Dumbledore somehow got out of his paddock today, and I walked out to find him picking a fight with Severus Snape (Naked Neck cockerel twice his size) through the NN paddock fencing. It got pretty heated, Dumble got a bloody comb, spurs came out, he WOULD NOT leave Severus alone. Took me 30 minutes to round him up (and only because I set a little block/trap for him and herded him there - I've learned the fine art of rooster-catching!). On the other hand, Puppy, one of my NN pullets, routinely flies out of the paddock (likes to hide nests). She got out today and I also found her wandering around the yard. What did I do? I said "Come here, sweetheart", and she walked toward me and I picked her up. While I'm not looking for pets, I much prefer anything I can get in a Cream Legbar that's closer to scenario #2 - makes it easier to keep them healthy and safe. (Though even my friendly ones still act like cats - the NNs are like puppies. But the Legbars have MUCH better self-preservation skills with regard to hiding from hawks, and sound the alarm as needed. It's a trade off.)

Right now I have seven eggs in lockdown from Lissa (very good auto sexing, best markings/coloring of my CL girls) - so far, two boys, two girls. We'll see what they look like when they dry off.

treats - yep -- but have you treated them with Magical Mealworms? They will stampede you and your wife and they will want to be on your hands, arms, head and shoulders. (maybe.)

Baby photos!!!! Of seven fertile eggs that went into lockdown, six babies so far (2 boys, 4 girls). GREAT markings! This is very good, as the entire point of this hatch was to get pullets from Lissa.



(One more egg not pipped yet, but it's only day 21, so I'm going to wait and give it a chance.)
