Cream Legbars

Yesterday in a pen of 5 legbar hens, I got 5 eggs. I'm quite proud of these hens, although they were total slackers through the winter. They are laying even better than my Isabel Leghorns.

One of the hens in that pen is just over 5-years old! She has been a fantastic layer ever since she started.

Sometimes, I think that they try to out do each other, so productive hens stimulate their room mates to be more productive.

I wish my free loaders would get the message. They are happy to eat and play all day, no eggs.

LOL -- give them time and they will behave.

  • And then there's always 'the talk'. -- tuck a cook book under your arm and go to the pens and sit them down and say --" your job is to make eggs...or else!."
  • And then there is the old 'put pepper in their food' trick.
  • There is a product at TSC called 'egg maker' or something like that and it is really expensive for a little yellow bag -- maybe 5#. In TSC one day a woman told me that she swears by it -- and it magically makes them lay.

You guys on this thread will appreciate this.

I got a call from a guy wanting to buy some chickens for his backyard flock. He asked how many eggs a legbar lays in a year. I told him I was not sure but I would guess 250-280 maybe more I was just guessing.

He said "Oh, I want something like a leghorn that lays 1,000 eggs a year or better".....

You've got to be kidding! I have to know what you replied to that one lol

two turkey hens and a legbar vying to use the same nesting space. I set up the tote best for turkeys..
That is so funny! Hope they don't break any eggs while vying for space. I had a clumsy hen that couldn't exit the nestbox fast enough and a couple times she poked one of her long toenails into the shell.
