Creating a new breed

I found it. It would end up costing me $80...It's not worth it to me..my 'bator is faulty.

I just started three silkie x americana/ee eggs so we'll see what happens.
I mean okay. In reality, it's a lot cheaper than all the feed and electricity that you'll end up spending on all the birds in between when you could cut several years off the effort....

cyprus has a point..

Yeah, but my incubator is faulty and none of the eggs could hatch and thats $80 wasted if they don't. It's a good idea though.

I'm going to see what the result of the EE/americana and silkie cross is, and then maybe I'll think about it :)

I have a Silkie x Easter Egger pullet. She has a few feathers on her legs and has 9 toes total. She hatched from a blue egg, but lays tinted eggs.

What color was the silkie she is crossed with? Thats kind of the look i'm going for except more like blue/splash coloring.
She is beautiful!
When using a mixed breed or bird of unknown genetic background you really never know what you will get.
The mother is on the right.

This is a pullet from the exact same cross as my pullet. Same parents as my pullet but the daughters look very different.

The father was a White Silkie.

@MelissaRose Words of the wise: If you're trying to establish a new breed, using mix breeds as the parent stock is a bad idea. You need birds with known and sound genetics to even have a real shot at what you want to achieve.

Flat out, you really should invest in a better incubator. Whether you're doing this the hard way or the easy way, a faulty incubator is going to make your life hell.

New breeds were never established by cutting corners. Money was spent, years of effort invested and culling was heavily practiced.

Full cold hard honesty here, you have a much better chance of success by breeding a paint blue-egg-laying Silkie male to a splash Ameraucana female. Otherwise, you're mixing colors and are not going to be able to achieve a clean blue splash (which btw will have black as well by default).

This post isn't intended to be harsh or flaming. It's meant to relay the honesty of such an undertaking that everyone should know.

Thanks for those wise words. I am planning on finding a better incubator. The one I have can hatch twelve eggs. It's 24 egg incubator but the other 12 spots have very uneven temperatures.
Again, thanks for that info. It sounds like you have experience with this sort of thing.

What's your budget for an incubator?
