Do not handle a suspected rabid animal with your hands, if it is dead pick it up using a shovel or something.

Pour bleach on all blood and anything that comes in contact with it, the virus can be killed with bleach.
 
Sorry couldn't read all the posts - just the initial one in this thread....wanted to note that I've encountered in rescue work many a cat like this before. They almost always are not rabid (not saying the one you're encountering isn't, just that it's only a very small percentage that are). Usually they are "just" scared, hungry, sick and/or had a horrible prior experience with humans. One of my rescues was the terrorist from he77 - you would have thought he had rabies 1000 times over. Not at all. I caught him in a hav-a - hart and it was a several month project but now he curls up like a baby in the arm's of the kind and patient man who adopted him.
