Creole Dorkings????

The little "dwarf" chick still has not grown at all.. it's still the size it was when it hatched.. so I may end up culling the little guy.. he eats and drinks.. just isn't growing...

lol.. you don't have any bantams in the mix do you?

So sorry about the dwarf chick, but no, I have never have had bantams! I make it easy on my self by only having two breeds icelandics and Dorkings and thankfully I can tell them apart by their toes when they hatch, and their parents are in separate coops so there is no way they could have been cross bred. I did have a smaller one with my last hatch, but it has grown so you may be right in culling the little guy. I had another terrible hatch, only got 9 out of 41! I lose them all at the end, the first 9 hatch fine and then the last don't even pip. I eggtopsied them and they were all well formed and positioned, two were shrink wrapped, all of them hadn't absorbed all of their yolk sac. My problem has to be with the last 3 or 4 days. I did a dry incubation, but put a little water for the hatch this time. the times before I did the recommended humidity. Last year I only incubated twice and both times got about 50 percent.

Any way my first guys are doing fine, will have updated pictures of them, and these new guys too soon!

Sounds like a bacterial issue.. how do you clean your incubator?.. bacteria will kill the chicks just a few days before hatch. If your cleaning is fine.. make sure you wash your hands with an anti-bacterial soap before touching the eggs. Then see how the next batch does.

The little dwarf STILL hasn't grown at all.. He is still the same size as when he hatched. He is going down more in his hocks.. so even the vitamins aren't getting absorbed properly.. He eats and drinks.. but it seems his body just won't grow.. so he's going to be culled. He is cute.. but with going down in his hocks a little more every day you can tell there is something wrong with him..

You may be right, thats the only thing I haven't changed. I have always opted to go organic, washing with hot water, soap and vinegar, but this time when I was done, I washed everything with bleach. All my chickens are healthy and active, but I can't think of anything else I could have done wrong. I even increased the vents so more air circulation. Do you wash your eggs before you put them in? I never have but I know some that do.

How are your chicks doing! Even with my poor hatches , I now have about 7 little roos to continue my project! Waiting for the reds to come from Dick horstman and I will be set. I have a broody sitting on a bunch of eggs now, so I am anxious to see her hatch rate, if it is good, then mama is going to get a new incubator! lol Fortunately with Dorkings, I should have lots of broodys soon and I will let them do all the work!!!

I need to take some updated pics today!

Hey, question - I have some reds incoming from Jeanne. Hers are rosecombs, not straight. What would you think of introducing the rose comb to the line? Would it be a negative? If so, I'll make sure to keep them separated.

Well, if I get some Crele eggs **grins** So, either next year from Yinepu or this year from Joyous....one can hope, yes?

I personally love the rose combs. I know people either hate them or love them. My DH hates them. Lol! I have rose comb colored Dorkings I'm working on. Just my opinion...

I actually prefer the Rose combs and breed for them. I had to introduce the single comb with the Cuckoo's because that's all I could find. I am really surprised that I got so many single combs out of this breeding when the rose comb is dominant and the parents of these chicks all were rose combed. I chose to get eggs from Dick because they are so close to breed standard but I will continue to strive for a rose comb crele!i
