Crested ducks the whole Picture

Wow, I had no idea. I received 2 crested ducklings today, they were a gift. Hopefully I don't have a male and female.
Even if you do they can mate just take the eggs and enjoy eating them and that way you won't have the heartbreak that goes with 2 crested having off spring.
Nothing to worry about enjoy those babies, I'd dif add niacin to their water though right from the start.

Thanks Miss Lydia. I was planning to eat the eggs, no babies for me! I've heard that duck eggs are perfect for baking.
Is it OK to add the niacin to their water along with quick chick?

I don't know how long is good on the save a chick is that what your talking about? You need to check into that I read once and I can't remember where of course but it said save a chick has quite a bit of sodium in it so I don't think it's for long term use, I wish I had some here so i could read the package good to get them started though. I always give my babies extra nutrients for their first week,. you might could do a bit of research and find out how long you can give it too them. or maybe it says on the package. maybe chick quick is different than Save a Chick too. I've always used Poultry Nutri Drench, most important is to give them a good start especially after what they have been through. But if you do decide to stop the quick chick after a week then begin the niacin.

Miss Lydia, I sent you a PM:-)

I don't have a package of Sav-a-Chick here either, but I've used it before and I like it. The directions on the package tell you to offer a batch of S-A-Chick + water alongside a normal batch of water. The problem is with ducklings is that I don't know that the ducklings would know to go between the two types of water as needed. Adults, I believe, would. But ducklings, totally different story.

So I suppose I would make up a batch, I believe it is one pkt mixed into 1 gal water, I would then store that inside of a clean container and refrigerate the extra. I'd make a non spill waterer like the cottage cheese container style, and so I'd offer the ducklings that for 3-4hrs, then switch it out with plain water, and so forth. And I would do that for 3-5 days. I don't think I've ever used S-A-C longer than 5 days.

Enjoy your eggs! They are Delish. :)

How are the babies doing this morning?
I was up with them a few times last night, just checking to make sure they're ok, it's like having a newborn again! I am at work right now, but hope to go home soon to check on them. So far they're eating and drinking. They are pecking at the dry chick starter, but I can't tell if they're actually eating it. I gave them some more mash and fresh water before I left this morning. They seem so attached to each other constantly cuddling and grooming each other, it is so sweet! Not to be too graphic...but they're hilarious when they poop, they take a couple of quick steps backwards wiggle their tales then squat, you can hear them from across the room

Oh, yes, duckling poo. The sights! The sounds! The comedy! The drama!

The aroma!

No, usually it was not problematic.

I would sit for hours watching the ducklings. Every move they made was fascinating, some were worrying. How they would sit, stand, wobble, doze off, wake up, get up on tippy toes and flap those little flippers!
