***Crevecoeur Thread***

Pics
Nice photo, Miss Ashly... is that the Ideal cockerel again? What about the hens? Good luck with them, they are a nice looking trio.

To everyone interested in breed conservation, please bear in mind that the original Creve is black and was never blue... any blue Creves out there are the results of people tinkering and crossing with other breeds. Pretty perhaps, but raising blacks is the best thing we can do to keep the real Crevecoeur going.

I wanted to post a picture to this thread to help clarify the earlobe color question. The standard states that positive enamel white is a general disqualification for any breed that is listed in the standard as having red ears. Here is a look at what an enamel white earlobe really looks like, using the Rosecomb Bantam, the example they use in the standard:

Ay yi yi! As you can see, that is a white earlobe that is thick, velvety, and highly reflective white.* A Crevecoeur should NOT have an earlobe like this and they never have. However much people may complain and worry about white earlobes on their Creves, it is highly unlikely you have anything like an enamel white earlobe. Most probably your earlobes are whitish or touched with white - and that is O.K. by the standard. It will not disqualify you.

However, until we are able to change the APA Standard to reflect the Crevecoeur's correct earlobe color, a whitish earlobe probably will prevent you from winning a show, and that is something we have to pull together and do something about.

Remember that a small size will also prevent you from winning a show - and that is something we can start trying to fix right now, by breeding our best typed birds and then selecting their offspring to save the ones that are the healthiest, and that grow the fastest and the largest.

Good luck everyone, and happy breeding,
exop

I'm thinking about breeding my creves. I've 2 girls, both from ideal. The eldest I got around the end of April from the feedstore & the younger is from a 6-29 hatch date. I know the pics aren't the greatest & it's early to really tell for the sop, but was wanting some feedback. Please & thank you. I know the breed is rare & could use the development.

The younger, looking boyish today. At 3 months still anything goes too.

The older. Certain a girl, but hadn't started laying.

OK. Tried to load older 3x with no photo showing. If does, sorry in advance.

I acquired a quad of Creves, just in love with them so far

From what I researched (I once considered them seriously) is that they are a bit standoffish and like to roost in trees rather than their coop but that they are a gentle breed. After about a year of having them, let us inquiring minds know what your honest assessment is of them. I think any rare breed is worth the effort to continue if they have some redeeming quality like gentle temperament, non-combative roos, fair to decent egg production, or good foragers, etc. Thx for sharing and more pics please!
