I remembered seeing a container that would dispense crickets out a small hole in the side (see this link: http://www.petsolutions.com/default.aspx?ItemId=15522823&EID=PG15522823&SID=PGRAB ) which is made for reptiles. I looked them up online but was thinking one even larger than this would be good, so I could fill it with more crickets.

Does anyone think a clay flowerpot turned upside down onto a saucer would work as well? I thought they could escape out the top drainage hole... but I'm not sure if they could catch hold of the insides of the pot. Thoughts? I was thinking this might be entertaining for coopbound chickens- my 8 weekers won't be turned out into the run for a few more weeks- the coop is roomy, but I thought this might be fun....

I think that's a great idea!

The clay pot, with saucer would work real well with chickens in my opinion. Gotta give this one a try. thanks!

Fun is watching 50 chickens go after 1000 crickets when the box is opened in the run. Crickets going every direction with chickens after them. And a chicken after another chicken that has caught a cricket. I can picture the chickens waiting at the opening for the next cricket to come out.

this kind of weather 8 week old chicks should be out in the fresh air. I have some four day olds that the mama has out in the run with all the other chickens. Some will say the other chickens will go for the chicks, no way. Mama will put even the meanest roo in his place if he even looks at the chicks.

Crickets should be able to climb up the sides of a clay pot as long as it isn't oil painted on the interior...They can climb up just about anything...

Panner, DH just got the coop finished last week (well, not FINISHED, but ready enough). Naturally the day after my mom left for home after her visit, sigh... til then they were in the dog bath in my mudroom- can you say stinky? I have one in there still, my little crookneck girl who is almost perfect now. But now we are starting on the run and I have many predators in the area so I can't let them just roam yet. I do take them to my garden which is fenced to get some sun a few days a week... but it's not next to the coop, unfortunately. The coop is 8.5' x 16 ' though and VERY roomy compared to a bathtub, LOL! And it has three windows and a security screen door that is open all day, so they are getting fresh air. The material we plan to use is $$$ and some of it is on order... I'm looking forward to the day when the can come and go at will. Eventually I will let them free-range under supervision when a bit more mature...
