Crippled chicken

I took her and he prescribed her Albon. He gave her a poor prognosis. Fecal test came back negative. She all of the sudden had a crooked neck and he's wondering if someone intentionally poisoned my animals or if there's something somewhere that's toxic in the yard. What's strange is my sisters dog who I was homing while she was having her house built had to be put down right before Christmas. She was walking dizzy and she was almost 14 and we thought old age, a stroke or something but I wonder... Did my rooster bother neighbors? He really only crowed for a very short period throughout the day. Now I'm thinking maybe I should just stick with hens just in case? I don't know!! I wish we knew the real reason. So we'll see... He doesn't expect to see her next week and I'm hoping to prove him wrong. Freckles is the paint silkie in my avatar.

I'm sorry about Freckles prognosis. Hope you can prove the vet wrong though. I actually had a guinea (Misty) who the vet said was very sick and anaemic and would die if they didn't give her a blood transfusion. Which probably wouldn't work anyway. So we took her home and 2 weeks later she was completely well and we celebrated her 2nd birthday. We think she got sick from drinking grey water. But God healed her and I'll be praying for your little Freckles.

I'm sorry I don't really have much advice. Just maybe keep your remaining chickens in the coop or even inside the house if it would be safer. Maybe it was some rat poison or termite poison they ate? Or something toxic could be washing down the hill into your yard maybe? Do you have cane toads in America? Just some ideas.

Good luck! :hugs

They're both separated inside the house for now. I'm thinking of moving the coop to the garage for a while anyway Bc It gets below zero here and there's only 2 chickens to keep each other warm now. What do I do if freckles doesn't make it? I'd feel terrible putting marshmallow outside all by herself. Ugh such decision. This chicken keeping has not been easy :(

:( you could possibly just keep them inside?

Crippled chickens can do very well if separated from the flock of bullies.
Many years ago I found a Barred Rock hen hanging up side down in my roosting area. She caught her foot between two 2x4 that we made for roosts. I took her off thinking she could recover. She lost her balance and could not stand. The others started to peck on her. I gathered her up and placed her in a box in the LR. We examined her thinking the foot would recover. It fell off after a month. We have dairy cows so we placed her in and a dog carrier and locked her up at night. She free ranged on dairy feed and did very well. It was not long afterwards another hen was being bullied and we placed her along with the Barred Rock. We named the Barred Rock "Ilean Irene" and the other Fluellamae. They both were inseparable. After 10 -12 years Irene was not eating and she died. The other hen tried to get her to eat but could not entice her with bugs she found. A week later Fluellamae died.. and it seemed from a broken heart. I know that sounds sappy but she was doing well up to Irenes death. We buried them in our little pet cemetery.
To this day our granddaughter still talks of those two hens. Granddaughter is 22 years old!
Theres hope for crippled chickens.
Kind regards

She's eating but is severely underweight. She still has very nasty stools. Honestly every day I think is going to be her last :( the vet is thinking poisoning or some toxins in the yard. Thinking he might be right.

:( It must be hard for you. So sorry about your little Freckes. How is she going? I know how worrying it is when they get sick - they're just like people to us. I hope you stay strong and Freckles recovers :hugs

Best wishes

Hi all,
Just saw this thread and thought I would add myself to this list.

Shirley is our dear gimpy chick, she is my avatar pic when we first got her. Her story is a little different. We finally found our new home with an acre and the ability to 'farm'. We had decided that being an older home (the house and I are same age) we get some work done. A roof and hey a new kitchen! Well, that was almost a year ago and a whole long story that doesn't belong in a chicken forum. So long story short We are still working on things, ahem.

Way back when we thought "wahoo two more weeks to go!" things started to go south and the crew being good hearted fellows did the best they could. Work slowed to a crawl and few showed up to work. One of the more senior fellows, who spoke little English but always managed to make us laugh, showed up ranting and raving at the 'boss'. The next day he showed and apologized profusely and handed me a box.

Amidst the debris and power tools Gilberto says to me "OPENOPEN". Inside were the tiniest little chicks I had ever seen...oh boy! Let me rewind just a bit so you will understand that I had half of my house closed off with a plastic wall and mostly no roof. As well as having 6 just feathered peepers waiting ever so patiently in my laundry room for me finish their coop.

Sooo, now I had 2 new tiny little things. Well I manage to get a box set up with food and water and lamp and all those good things. All the while they are purring the sweetest little songs, they seriously sounded like a stream burbling. I finally get them arranged and head back out side to find out what all this was for. I say "Gilberto, chickens?" Now think of the thickest Cuban accent you can with very little skill in speaking English (he understood just fine!) "JES, jou luf dem see!" and points at my laundry Chickens " Oh, well thank you so much I don't know what to say" all flustered now Gilberto starts waving his arms in a very Cuban manner "NONONONO, is for JOU..IS FOR THANK JOU...errrr I am sorry for ehh jesterday". Hahahaha I guess he felt bad for how he acted and his apology was chicks!

Now that I understood what was going on I need to see where they came from just to try and get some background. "SO Gilberto, do you know what KIND of chickens these are?" There are looks passed and hmmms and finally I ask the only crew member left how to translate. What he came up with was "Que clase de chicken?"....more looks and hmms then, arms in the air "QUE CLASE?! ......CHICKEN they are chicken!" Right about there I knew I would have 2 separated chickens for the foreseeable future.

As the days went by I was working my tush off on the house and checking on those sweet babies, letting them cuddle me in the evening. That's when I noticed her leg was..off. Finally after a bunch of research it seemed the best diagnosis was perosis and I set off to make a 'cast' and a chicken cup. Well we did the best chick physical therapy I could and she was very patient and we got her to the point where she is in the pic. We did not stop we kept it up but she started to grow, and grow, and grow! The bogger she got the more her leg twisted again an no amount of PT would help.

She is currently one of 2 porch chickens waiting for their new private land yacht. She hops around with great speed and has the greatest of dispositions. In May she will be a year, along with her partner in crime, who is now called Pat which is another story, lol.

Here is to all those crazy chicken ladies and dudes who find it in their heart to hope!
