Critque 2yro RPSI gelding

Not to take over your question about your beatiful little guy, but this is my long backed horse and his flat croup.......he's mostly a pasture ornament now.

Does it work now? Even though this is a small pic, he is 16.2 HH.

Picture doesn't work... needs to be a jpeg or gif not link to an attachment in your hotmail inbox...

FWIW, pic of my long-backed mare (bad angle, doesn't show how long her back actually is; she is 13, works hard 5-6 days a week and is sound, although requires regular chiropractic after a trailer accident):

Haha! Those are nothing!

A friend of mine was thinking of getting this mare:

^^^ granted her topline is severely lacking in muscle...that's a pretty long back, regardless.

and this is a very bad picture of the mare I currently own:

^^^ she's a AQH, so they're normally a bit slopey and bum high. I think her back is just a tad long, but most of is is a lack of muscle (she had 3 months off so we've been working on getting back into shape in time for some light showing...and yes...the "before" picture is just terrible, lol)

considering his breeding, he looks good.
yep he's downhill but chances are good he'll level out, but you know that already.
i think his legs look fine, he stands funny and looks a little awkward because his feet are atrocious. i agree get on that pronto or over time it will affect his overall well being and confirmation/body type.

Well, if you wanna tear that front leg apart, he's also behind at the knee.

If he is reasonable, go with it. I'm sure he'd stay perfectly sound into his teens provided with a good farrier, slow training and good care.

I don't like to tear a horse apart. MANY of today's jumpers have less than perfect (by far) conformation below the knee and hold up with proper management and training. For jumpers, it's heart first conformation second. I know it sounds silly, but it's true.

I think you should have a good vet (vet to the stars) evaluate him and those fores and go from there. I don't like that all the photos are retouched, so I'd want some GOOD unretouched photos, too.

He looks like he'll fill out nicely. Those feet... I agree. That is a hack job, right there.
I personally don't think he's long in the back. He's got a beautiful head and nice, long neck. It's so tough with those young ones. They can grow into themselves or they can not... You just don't know.
I'd have a vet, a good vet and one you trust, go take a look at him.
And yes, we can sit and pick him apart, but no horse will be perfect. Overall, I think he's a nice looking horse. I'm concerned about the feet but only time will tell with them. One bad trim can take months and months to fix.
He's not screaming "dressage" to me, but he looks like a hunter. Like I said, time will tell. He may just like dressage!

I was thinking Jumper with him. To me he has to much leg action to be a hunter and seems to be too "ADD" for dressage, lol...maybe once he matures...but if I do decide to get him, he will be a show jumper.

I did ask for better and current conformation pictures... once I get those I'll post them pack on here, a long with forwarding them to my farrier at home.

Thank you all again for your input. I'll keep you updated.

To me:

I like his balance, nice neck, nice head. I think his topline is fine for his age, will level out as he grows. Shoulder angulation looks decent, not as nice as some, but better than many. Arm is maybe a bit short, but really not bad at all. The two things that stick out to me, which I would be concerned about are that his stifles seem a bit straight, and that in both standing pics he looks a bit back at the knee. Dad also has straighter stifles... in fact the whole back end looks exactly like Dad's to me, but he looks a bit over at the knee.

I have seen a lot of foals that looked over at the knee, straighten out as they grew, but I've never seen one back at the knee come forward. I have seen a lot of weanlings that look a bit straight in the pasterns, that drop as they grow. So I wouldn't worry so much about that. I agree he has more knee action than would be ideal in the hunter ring.

So I guess it depends on what they are asking. No horse is perfect.

Those young ones are just so tough... You can't look into the future to see how they will turn out. But it's so great to get one that someone else hasn't ruined!
Good luck with him. I'm anxiously awaiting for the pics and ferrier report!

I think he's beautiful. His back isn't too long, he still has to grow and muscle up. I think Jumper but I also think dressage. He carries himself beautifully. My daughter only wishes she could have a horse that that. However, her litte Arab cross is wonderful and we wouldn't trade him for the world.
Where in NY are you?
