Crocheters Thread

Aw thank you!

So a couple months ago, my 5 year old granddaughter (who lives in Oregon and I live in Indiana) convinced my daughter to buy her a Disney Princess amigurumi crochet kit. And then they FaceTimed me to show me, and ask me if I would teach her to crochet. I had my doubts, but I said I could try the next time I visited. So she said “Okay how about next week?” 😂

Haha, no, can’t just come over that quick! But we had been thinking of taking a trip out there for her brother’s birthday in mid April, so that’s what we decided to do.

I think 5 is too young to learn to crochet. She got how to hold the hook and the yarn. But then she couldn’t get her mind to grasp yarning over and pulling up a loop. She couldn’t really make her fingers do it. So she asked me to just crochet them myself and she would watch. I will say, she had a great attention span and she (mostly) watched me for over an hour. She was waiting to do the stuffing.

Our visit was a week long, and I was able to finish two princesses, Aurora (which is my granddaughter’s name) and Moana.

I brought the rest of the kit home and told her I would (eventually someday) make the other ones for her. (It only has yarn to make two dolls but the booklet has instructions to make 20. I’m pretty sure I have all the colors I will need!)

That's awesome that you were able to share that much time with your granddaughter - special memories were made for sure (for her also).
Those are cute. I really need to learn how to crochet one of these days while my fingers still work.

The two dragons were for the two grandsons who are the big brothers. They each have a little sister, and I finally finished the girls’ scarves.

One loves Disney princesses and the other loves dogs. The dog is modeled after my dachshund Toby.

Finnie, that's fantastic! Especially your dog. You are so talented!

I’ve been watching videos. I’m thinking of trying an introductory kit.
Oh happy days. Let us know how the kit works out. If you're willing, share the links to the videos if they were helpful.

I've yet to have time to pursue this endeavor, but soon I hope. I just recently found my supplies and some yarn; although I donated two large boxes of yarn about 6 months ago. Why is it that something sits around for years, we get rid of it and then want or need it shortly thereafter? Am I the only with this ailment?

This is the intro kit that I purchased. I’ve been practicing stitches before I start it. Today I completed my first single crochet chain.

Just stumbled on this thread. Very talented people and some beautiful creations!
I attempted to learn how to crochet on a number of occasions. With each person they would get impatient with me, take the needles from my hands along with the thread and say, "no like this", and then proceed to stitch themselves. Both were relatives so maybe that was the problem. I gave up trying to learn and gave away two 40 gallon bags of yarn. Wish I would have kept it to attempt it once more.
How does one learn how to crochet anyway? I've tried to learn from an instructional book with pictures and that didn't work either. Perhaps I'm not cut out for it.
You mention needles - dI take that to mean Knitting needles?

Use large needles so you can see the stitches clearly. I learnt on baby wool and 3mm needles :( Try this tute by Hobby Lobby. :) Don't give up!
