I started chaining my next blanket but I’ll have to find this yarn again. I bought 2 skeins but it says 13 needed for a blanket.

I love to crochet, and yarn makes a HUGE difference in the ease that you will have with your projects. I would say you have some big decisions to make as you go about crocheting.

Eventually, you will decide which of the two types of crochet hook heads you like the best, the Bates type with the angled cut or the Boydes with everything rounded. It will likely depend on the type of yarn you are going to use. You'll also need to decide on the type of handle you want your hook to have. I was fine with the thin handles for years, but I crochet tight, so having thicker handles helps for my hand fatigue.

Then you will likely develop a preference about yarn, which may be informed by the type of projects you enjoy making and the hooks that are comfortable for you to use. If you want to use fingering weight yarn, you won't be using gigantic hooks. And if you are crocheting tight, you won't be using angora or plastic hooks.

Certain types of yarn are definitely more difficult to work with... and unsuitable for some projects. You need to think about the elasticity of the yarn and its weight for the project that you are working on. I love alpaca, but it is not elastic and it can end up being heavy and misshapen. You want to think about flammability as well. I always use wool when making animals for kids, as it resists flames. Textured yarns can be difficult, as it makes your stitches difficult to see (but if you can suppress the nap until you are finished...)

It is best if you have a pattern where you have a bit of variation in the stitch, so that you do not have to worry so much about your tension. And you can always add a crochet edge later and make things look evened out. Plus, I have found that the majority of people don't know anything about handicrafts and will likely think that the entire thing is fine!

I hate it when that happens! It’s harder to check online but when buying yarn in person make sure to double check the color and dye lot number on the tag. If they match the skeins were dyed at the same time and are more likely to look exactly the same!!

That's a real bummer! It happened to me when I was making an afghan for my grandson. I had ordered all the yarn I needed, but the warehouse didn't check lot numbers. I was very upset but Ian, our grandson, said the different shades didn't matter because he is color blind!
