Crocheters Thread

Hobby lobby has these adorable little keychain crochet hooks for about $3.

Question, has anyone made a sweater/blanket with the big skeins of cheap acrylic yarn (like big twist, red heart super saver, loops n threads soft classic, Caron jumbo)? Was it warm and comfy or was it overly scratchy? I'm asking because I really want to crochet my first sweater but don't feel like spending 220 dollars on yarn.

Not sure why I don’t have a better pic of it but last year I crocheted this cardigan from super saver yarn because I could not resist the colors!

Pros: I get a lot of compliments on the colors haha. It was not expensive yarn

Cons: it definitely is scratchier than my nicer yarn garments, but you can wash it with fabric softener and that for sure has helped. Mine is not very warm but I think it’s more due to the pattern (granny square) and less the yarn.

In conclusion: I really love my cardigan and don’t regret making it with the yarn I chose!

I always use Red Heart 4ply worsted weight yarn for my afghans. They don't appear to be scratchy, they are comfortable when you snuggled under them.

You can test it: make something small with the yarn you are thinking of using, then wear it for a while. Maybe a strip that goes around one wrist like a bracelet.

That will tell if it feels scratchy or itchy to you, which may be different than what someone else thinks.

Wow! Those really are some nice colors. Did you use the pooling yarn or multiple skeins of solid colors? I don't get how pooling works and how people seem to get as many stitches as they want out of a limited amount of yarn. it's just so crazy to me as an amigurumi person lol. Good to know the fabric softener helps!
