Crop issues need HELP!

They sleep with no food or water until the morning. These 2 little ones sleep in a crate in the garage as they are too small to be integrated with the older pullets. They have their own chunnel for the day, and right now the chunnel is on concrete so he does not have a chance to get his crop full of grass.

This morning His crop was not full, but it was not empty either. Maybe it is slow because he is not out of the woods. I suspect he had an impacted or slow crop for more than a week.

He was somewhat perky this morning. He drank and ate a little bit and then he put his head in his wing and took a snooze. He is up and around now and eating normally. He always acts like he is starving, lol. Maybe he was because of the impacted crop.

It sounds to me like you are doing everything right :) and yes his crop may be just taking a while to get working as normal. I would keep doing what you are and give chicken food and plain water only. Maybe a bit of yogurt. Keep an eye.

I put Rooster Booster in their water which has vitamins, electrolytes and lacto bacillus. His last poop was very solid and seemed a bit dry, and it wasn't very big. Almost like he is constipated. I just went to check his droppings in the kennel, and 1/2 of them are pretty dry. I can tell when they are a bit moist because they are on puppy liners. No moisure got through on 1/2

Sour crop is a potentially fatal condition that occurs when a hen's crop does not fully empty and a bacterial yeast infection results. The following can cause sour crop; inadequate access to grit; consuming long, fibrous grass, weeds and other plant fibers; excessive amounts of bread or pasta; eating wood chips, sand, string or twine; moldy feed.

Sour crop is identified by a squishy, soft, engorged crop, sour breath and possibly some liquid coming out of the hens's mouth. To treat sour crop, massage the crop in the direction of the head to try to induce vomiting and feed the hen yogurt, olive or vegetable oil and water with apple cider vinegar in it along with additional grit to aid in digesting the mass. Withhold all other solid foods and continue to massage the crop gently several times a day until the condition improves.

Thank you Cuzchickens. He is being treated for sour crop, and was lavaged by a vet 3 times. He is on Monistat, day 3. I imagine after a bout with impacted and sour crop, his system would be a bit slow. What do you think? He has access to clean water, chick crumbles and grit. Should I withhold all food, and vomit him?

What does his crop feel like? Vomiting and withholding food needs to happen according to how the crop feels.

Mine is shaking her head a little bit, but no longer eating or drinking. She ate some this morning, and I gave her a little yogurt with olive oil, but she has had nothing since 9am. I had to go to work, so I can't monitor her. She has head tucked in close. I fear she is not long for this world, and it just breaks my heart. I massaged her a few times this morning, but she would not vomit.

This evening she is still kind of puffed up with her head tucked in from time to time. She seems weak. She tried to fly onto a perch and couldn't get up to it even tho it isn't very high. I'd assume she's pretty weak from being malnourished. What should I do?

That is so heartbreaking! It makes you feel so helpless and at the same time overwhelmed. I have no answers, as we seem to be battling the same thing. I was so sure I was going to come home to a dead chickie, and she was eating and drinking like there was no tomorrow. I will check her crop in the morning and take it from there. Hopefully her crop will be empty in the morning, and I have bought myself another day.

I sure hope your girl gets better. I just lost a 5 year old silkie due to this. Its a sad thing to feel so helpless. My girl also had a internal laying issue as well.your doing all you can. Hopefully she comes around for you!
