His eyes are also rather gorgeous, might I say! I've never seen a chicken with blue eyes like that before...

So I double checked tonight... the blue eyes are gone... it must be an age thing... I checked all 10 of my sapphires, guys and gals... and all yellow now! Not as dark orange as my other breeds, but not blue anymore. The one in the pic has a strange comb (only one) for a sapphire, so he was easy to check. Strange!

Must be like us mammals. Start out blue and change over time. Nifty.

If they have just eaten, it will feel like a little bag of the food they ate.

Oh my gosh that's so weird. Cool, but weird. What does sour crop feel like? I know a cause for concern is a hard crop.

It’s just the naked neck. I butcher my birds and this still creeps me out XD

To each their own I suppose ;)

Yes that lump on my barnvelder is his crop! Little piggie!

Oh my word!! That's impressive! How long does it take until the crop no longer bulges like that?

Aww, cuties!

No way! I don't wanna believe you-- his eyes were too pretty! :hit

They all empty overnight... but some of my chickens are more voracious than others, they go up and down throughout the day, and some tend to immediately run to the feeder to replace their meal. We’ve also been having awful weather here lately, so my chickens are pretty much coming out, scarfing food heavily, then retreating to their roosting area in the tractors to stay out of the high winds and cold.

I’ve noticed that the crops seem much more pronounced on my lighter breeds and younger chickens, kind of like a beer belly on an otherwise skinny person is more noticeable than on someone with a few extra pounds all over. The thought that always comes to mind for me is a chipmunk with its cheeks stuffed full! Another interesting thing is that no matter how stuffed they look, they always have room for mealworms or other treats :p
