I have a leghorn who is probably about 3. She is mostly blind and for the past few days was acting funny- isolating herself, not ranging, making no noise, not eating/drinking. She also seems to be blinder than usual. I noticed her crop was extra large and had been for a couple days. When I touched it it was very hard so I concluded it is impacted. I brought her indoors (its of course snowing here to make it all easier!) and gave her some oil, water, and very diluted gatorade to keep her hydrated. I have been massaging the crop once every hour or so since yesterday afternoon. it has gotten much softer and she has pooped a couple of times but it is not looking right (definitely is still there) and she still is acting strange. She has also had a couple of very stinky burps which makes me think the crop is sour too. Does anyone have advice?? I don't think I can do the crop surgery and am reluctant to take her to the vet. Please help!!!!! Thanks!!!!!

If you can get to a drug store, buy some lactobicillius acidophilus (priobotic found in yogurt). Sprinkle some in water or on food. When I raised exotic birds, I would sprinkle this on the hand feeding formula to prevent yeast infections in the crop-great success. Had a Dr recommend women take this as well when on antibiotics for the same reason (sorry if tmi). Another idea would be to see if you could get her to eat some yogurt....
Gatorade is also good...will prevent dehydration.
I never used this but used to have other bird breeders recommend papaya enzymes.
I would think that if its going down and she is pooping that is a good sign. Good luck!
