I have an EE hen that has a huge crop - and it has been that way for a few days - I felt it and it feels like a water balloon filled with something squishy and something " crunchy " she is walking and sleeping drinking pooping eating like everyone else. this crop is not going down over night like everyones elses. I read the thread on the operation of a crop - that is nothing I am able to do - dont have access to any of those surgical things that were used - there are no vets around that will treat her. What can I do for her ? I can post pics of her when DH gets home and helps me hold her still.
She is a great layer I would hate to lose her.

She has something in her crop that won't pass.I have a BLRW that has been like that for almost two months and she is still getting along fine.As long as it's not blocked it should be ok but just watch her and see if she's doing all the right things, eat, drink, and poop. You can try putting a litle mineral oil down her throat but be careful not to get it in her airway. Then massage the crop and try to break it up.It would be a good idea to take her food away from her for a day and see if it empties.Good Luck

she does not look like she is pain and she is still very active and one of the first to get in line for treats.
I just dont like the look of this huge lump on her chest. I dont think I can message this away it is pretty crunchy feeling

So sorry Julie and I totally understand about not being able to cut on your chicken, I could not do that either! Maybe you can search the forum for crop issues and find a way to flush it out...unicorn (Diana) might help you, she knows alot about emergencies...or maybe Cynthia...try pming one of them. Good luck!!!!

Try soaking olive oil in bread for her and see if she takes it...same thing as trying the mineral oil.....don't give her anything else to eat overnight...

Ok these might not be the best pics but here is what she looks like - just before bed - I dont offer them any food in the coop overnight just water. I will take a pic of her in the morning so you can see if there is any diff.

Wow, I'm going through the same thing right now with one of mine. A friend told me tomato juice will help break up whatever is in the crop, so tonite when I catch her I am going to put only tomato juice in her bowl and keep food away all night like scgmaecock suggests.

I dont mean to sound dumb

but what is live culture yogurt? is it just plain yogurt or something ? what ever is in the feels really " crunchy " so I have no idea what is in there - they have no hay or anything like that it kinda feels like it is full of the layer pellets they have out all day long, she is not known for eating anything like the shavings in the coop.

at this point I will try anything to help this go down - no one else is like this out there. If I put tomato juice out will it bother the others if they drink it? Do you think TS will have something I could give her ?
