Hello everyone.
I have 2 clinical cases with 2 Orpington hens, both around 9 months old, living in the same coop.
They lived in a coop with 1 rooster + 3 hens, the floor is wood and wheat straw over it, all my flock is dewormed, every 3 to 4 months

All behaving totally normal, except one who had her head always lying low, and did not eat as much as the others, but was still eating.

Hen 1 (started 3 weeks ago)
I've checked her crop, and it looked impacted, I've isolated her, been giving her coconut oil, and scrambled eggs and so on, but still wasn't eating much, after a few days without emptying her crop, I did crop surgery, (2 weeks ago) which was successful, no significant blood loss, and managed to remove everything, the contents were mostly straw with a weird smell. After 24 hours started giving her yogurt, she drinks some, but not voluntarily, same with water. 3 days ago gave her water with molasses, she drank some, but she barely has something in her stomach, she poops some white/green liquid, but only in small amounts, what I've noticed is she gets air/gas inside her crop very often, i massage it, it goes away, but a few hours later is back.

Hen 2 (started 2 weeks ago)
Was eating normally, but had a huge crop, isolated her, tried the same procedure as hen1, but the crop wouldn't empty, some liquid with a horrible smell would come out of her beak, if i massaged her crop, i was afraid she would aspirate some, so as last resort 1 week ago did crop surgery too, it was partially successful, there was some significant blood loss, but removed all i could see, mostly straw and some little stones, but a few hours after surgery noticed there was some still inside her crop, did give her water with molasses too, and she pooped some white green liquid in a significant amount, does not eat or drink a lot, but does so on her own. But still has some stuff (small amount) trapped inside her crop.

Hen 3 (1 week ago)
One day wasn't moving much or eating, only drinking a lot, no impactation on her crop, but had a pasty vent, with green poop, i suspected it was salmonellosis, gave her Norfloxacin, next day she was better, 2 days later back to normal.

Rooster - totally normal

After the case with hen 3, i gave Norfloxacin to hens 1 & 2, but the situation does not change.
So to cut it short:
Hen 1 does not eat or drink anything significant unless i help her to do so, moves around a little bit, and gets air/gas in her crop.
Hen 2 still has a small impactation, but drinks and eats a little bit on her own.
Hen 3 had what i suspected was a case of salmonellosis, and recovered in 3 days.

Note: i have 11 coops, i use the same straw on all of them, all the chickens get the same feed, and the same water. And I'm only having troubles with my orpington flock.
Any ideas what i can do for hen 1 and 2?

Many thanks in advance

I don't believe I saw you mention giving these crop patients probiotics following their crop surgery. That would be the first thing to try. I prefer acidophillis tablets. They sell it where you get vitamins for people. Give one tablet per day for a week.

If this doesn't improve digestive function, then I would try the three-day Epsom salt flush. One teaspoon of Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate) dissolved in half a cup of warm water. This solution is given twice a day by tubing directly into the crop for three days in a row. It should clean out the entire digestive tract.

Hi again. Thanks for you help. Update:
Hen 1 - I've used a tube, directly to her crop and gave her 25ml of water and acidophillis (theres more stuff in it not only acidophillis, but it was the best i could find) she hated it, but at least shes hidrated, tomorow will see if the crop is empty and repeat it.

Hen 2 - Like ive said the surgery was "partially successful, there was some significant blood loss but removed all i could see, mostly straw and some little stones, but a few hours after surgery noticed there was some still inside her crop"
Ive checked it today and felt there was some liquid between the crop and her skin, ive cut the stiches, and there was inded something leaking from her crop, found a hole in the crop, ive assumed the stiches from the previous surgery did not hold, and the crop was getting kind of "glued" to the skin with some yellow stuff around it. Took me almost 2 hours to clean everything the best i could, in the process ive managed to clean what was left in the crop, and found the previous surgery stiches, so this hole must have been there the all time, i have no idea how it happend, (im sure it wasnt me in the first surgery), either way it explains the significant bleeding during the first surgery. It was hard but ive managed to stich this hole aswell. Will wait until tomorow to start feeding her again.

My question is, how could this hole have opend?
The yellow stuff between the crop and the skin, was surely stuff that leaked from the crop, ive cleaned the best i could, but not sure it was 100% it was like it was creating a wall around the crop, shall i give her some antibiotic?

Yes. An antibiotic would be wise in view of the crop leakage into the body cavity. I doubt you'll find an adequate explanation for why the hole appeared. It could have been anything that caused it.

It sounds like it might have been a fortuitous thing. Now you know things are cleaned out and nothing is leaking. Your chicken is very lucky you possess the skills and courage to tackle this.
