Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

are you thinking meat chickens? Mine have restricted feed and still get huge. This is at 12 wks
I recall that Shad was talking about rescues who are spend layers. Not meat chickens.
Giving meat chickens a descent life after being fed with grower, up till a point they can hardly walk (obese), is almost impossible.
Imho it’s disgusting what the commercial chicken hatcheries have done with their inbreeding programs creating these fast growing meat chickens.

Having to lay an egg each day is not natural either and these chickens (commercial laying hens) often have a short lifespan too. Even when sold as backyard chickens as a chick or pullet at point of lay. These poor creatures can have a short but descent life after a spent life, with a lot of luck.
Caring for such rescues is very noble and in general not an easy task.

So fun story…today my dog started barking her head off and I looked out to see a guy up in the trees under the power lines spraying something on the bushes (which had just been brush-hogged a few days ago). I resisted the urge to load the shotgun because I saw the electric company truck on the road but went out and hollered “can I help you!?” He didn’t speak English. But his boss told me if I don’t want the power company spraying herbicide on my property I need to call them and let them know. He assured me it is safe for animals but added they don’t spray it where cows are. I guess I need a bull to protect my chickens from poison. 🤬
Our's did the same a few years ago, it killed grass 50 feet from where they sprayed and I am glad our garden and chickens are on the far side of the property. I will contact them to see if I can tell them to keep their poisonous garbage off my property.

Wall, I was speaking specifically of farmers, those trying to grow the same crops. And yeah, on the map there are all these vast areas, but they may not be suitable for agriculture even with warmer temps. Northern Canada, for instance. Finland.
As it happens, something relevant in this morning's Guardian

Moving towards the poles may not work, even where there is land suitable for farming.

Thanks for the article.
Yes. Climate change by burning fossil fuels is real. The impact is horrific and catastrophes increase every year. The governments and industry are not willing (enough) to make proper changes. And the individuals who want a change for the better cant do enough to stop the climate change bc > 50% of the people don’t care or don’t want to accept the truth.
I don’t want to mingle more than this in this conversation. It makes me sad to see that people still support the people in charge who make very wrong choices for our future.

Shad, did you ever try to approach a chicken-farm to rescue a a couple of chickens directly from the farming industry before the are send to the slaughterhouse?
I haven't, but I've spoken to people who do the rescues and the egg farms aren't interested in giving one ot two chickens. Not worth the trouble apparently.

I think I must owe quite a lot of tax. So here's some of the boys and girls blackberrying this morning

Ofcourse this might be more exception than the rule. But I find it surprisingly easy taking care of mine. The main problem lies in you need to physically be there or have an automatic feeder to feed a specific amount twice a day. And they need a run where they can always eat plants to deal with their chronic hunger and keep them exercising. They do well as long as you don't lock them up.

I agree with this. Which is why I find It good that french companies like Hubbard and Sasso make slower growing broilers because of the Label Rouge.

Huh that's interesting. Maybe because this goes through a more official channel or something. But with my CX it was just grabbing 2 of them, putting them in a box and then just leaving. This was right before they went to slaughter and since they left the barn risk of contamination and stuff is low.
