Oh hey, just me again.
So I have my sweet cross beak Dorothy. She was due for a beak trim so I wrapped her up and trimmed her top beak. It did bleed pretty good but she didn’t act like it hurt at all. I got the bleeding stopped with cornstarch. When I went to trim her bottom beak she squealed and I figured it hurt so I didn’t trim it. (The top beak is no shorter than my other girls). When I made her mash (which she is crazy for) she wouldn’t hardly touch it. Normally she gobbles it up. I feel SO bad. Is she just adjusting to her beak being shorter? Will she start eating again? Do I need to trim the bottom beak so they’re relatively the same length?

Note: I did touch her beak where I trimmed it and she didn’t indicate that it hurt.

Thank you guys for any input ❤️

I do not have any experience with cross beaks or beak trimming, but I am assuming she is treating it like a person would treat a sore tooth, and avoid eating where that tooth is, or not eating altogether. I am sure Dorothy will bounce back!

Has her beak started bleeding before when you were trimming her beak? If so, did she act like this before?

It has. I can visualize where the beak is light and dark (which I’m assuming is the quick) and I only clip the light part so I was surprised when it bled like it did. I was holding back tears because I feel so bad. I left her with her mash and will go check her crop before bed to see if she’s eaten any of it. If not do you think I need to hand feed it into her beak or will she be fine until morning?

When was the last time she ate before this?

It is always a horrible feeling when an animal bleeds when you are trimming something, but don't worry! It happens, definitely when there is a squirming creature needing the trimming!

Thank you 😭❤️
She had her lunch time mash around 12:30!

Well her crop was still empty and I made some fresh mash with bread pieces and she still wouldn’t eat 😫 I just ordered a tube feeding kit to have on standby just in case. Ugh.
Give her until the morning, she will be able to go for the rest of the day without food! Let her relax.

It is good to have that on stand-by even if you don't use it for her! I have never done tube feeding, only syringe feeding. Tube feeding sounds scary to me.
