Cross Continental Friends!!!

Soooo I just got back inside from discovering the abandoned for days chicken nest that I had yet to clean up had hatched a chick all by itself! The mothers were out with their babies and I heard someone crying so I peered in the nesting box and their was a HUGE cochin chick sitting in there staring at me! He is big compared to the others! So I took him out and was marveling over his cuteness when my little brother comes running to me all grossed out with a pipped egg saying the baby was still alive and there were ants in the shell. Yuck, so I took the egg and gave him the chick to play with while I did an emergency hatch. Not only were their ants but there was my least favorite thing in the entire world........fly eggs. Double yuck, all over the poor little guy! (sorry if anyone is easily grossed out!) So the emergency hatch was successful, I have them in there own brooder, the dry one is fat and happy, the newly hatched one is drying off. Well now, doesn't that sound fun!

Haha, yeah I figured it would get someone! Yup, true story, that has actually happened a few times now, chicks hatching days after the mom is gone, weird huh! Pictures later when number two is dry and fluffy!

isn't unusual having hatching of abandoned eggs, especially during the summer, when the weather is hot and the humidity so high

if they aren't helped during the hatching, they die on the shell

the risk of having handicap chicks is very high

Buonanotte ai suonatori!

Hey, pollo Rey, got a question bout Costa Rica. In a lot of other countries that aren't covered with supermarkets pet food like dog and cat and bird is sold at the local tiendita out of a huge bag and you just buy what you want. Is this the same where you are? And if you want a large quantity of livestock feed you have to know someone and/or you may have to travel to a feed store.
Just curious. I have seen bales of Al Falfa for sale out of the back of a truck in remote areas many a time.
