Cross country travelling, cat food, and death.....

Orchid I've been more creeped out by a guy following me around the isle in WalMart than anyone I have ever picked up. People that want to chop you into itty bitty bits with a hatchet...usually stalk you first. Which means...strangers are SAFER!!

I have carried before and picked folks up, but as a general rule...I'm not packing.

I did this past summer, I never ever pick up hitchhikers, but it was like 35C outside and it was obvious these 2 were not from around here, they had big hikers pack on their backs, white as ghosts and young maybe 17 and 19, I could tell they were siblings, and they were dressed in button up shirts and slacks (something else that led me to believe this was their first time doing anything of this sort) I drove past them the first time in the mid afternoon heat, and then an hour later drove back past them when I saw them I debated for a brief second and doubled back, I had both my kids with me and it was Canada Day. I knew there was nothing around for the next 100 to 150 miles where they be able to take a rest. so I picked them up, told them that the highway I am on is not real hitchhiker friendly, and people have waited days to be picked up only to be sent on their ways by the police. well they were real nice quebec boys with excellent manners so I asked them jokingly if they had run away from home? cause they were too well dressed to be hitchhiking, I mean they were even wearing black loafers!!!!

they told they were heading out west for work and mom and dad had refused to help them out with bus tickets so they thought it would be cheaper to hitchhike, they told me they had money for bus or train tickets ifit came down to it, but they really wanted to keep it to find an apartment in alberta. well I can understand that, having lived there and rented a place its a bit expensive. They also told me they were dressed like that so people wouldn't be freaked out by them...lol...I mean dress them differently both at 6+ feet tall I could see how they could be scary if it wasn't for their baby faces lol....

anyhow I drove them back into town to the truck stop where they could rest, get some food and some cold water and I also showed them where the bus and train depot was, and they got out said thank you, and went off to ask truckers if they were heading out west.

Ema I picked up these two young (late teens) black kids one night about midnight decked out in parkas with their pants saggin to their knees

They were walking in a snowstorm! Found out they were going to walk about 30 miles to the next town to their cousins house! They would have been frozen to death the way the wind was that night!! Needless to say they were VERY VERY thankful for the ride. Very sweet kids, but dressed like little thugs

I think of that just about every time I see someone in need of help.

No, I wouldn't. Not long ago a woman in north or south dakota (can't remember where it was exactly) stopped because there was a young child, 4 or 5 years old by himself along the side of the road......when she stopped and got out to approach the child a guy jumped her and made her drive them off to another location where he raped her. Sad that we can't even stop to help a child without fear anymore.

i made a promise to DH, that until the kids are grown, I'm not allowed to pick up hitchers. the exception being if I know them, even just from 'around town', and I'll call my mom, and say to her on the phone, as I let them in, "Hey, just found Bob Smith hitching on the side of the road, I'll call you after I drop him off"... that way, just in case... even in rural nowhere, where I live, people are assaulted and killed more often than i'd like... i prefer no violence.. so i don't think you should pick someone up. I hitched once, when my car broke down (before cell phones) in rural wisconsin, and was picked up by a kind of creepy guy, who then had HIS car 'break down', so I walked the rest of the 5 miles home. in a dress and sandals. my feet took years to recover. generally, there's a reason someone is thumbing for a ride, and I think it's about 80% good reasons, and 20% creepy reasons... i say let the big men pick up the hitchers.

Many times hubby will pick up friends around town LOL, they are thankful when the busses are not running those days or running late or very hot that day.

We have picked up stranded motorists, more often with wife and kids. When they ran out of gas, we would take them to the gas station and let them fill up the gas tank and take them back to their car. As for me, if I am driving by myself, no. Unless it is a woman with a dog LOL!
