Crossing my Red Ranger Hens.

Even though I quit breeding/hatching I do need to finish up my reports on the birds....

Its been about 20 weeks since I hatched the 3/4 Dorking 1/4 Red Rangers... They are not very hardy, growing very slow, and not looking healthy compared to other birds hatched at the same time. Next time I fiddle around with a heritage breed to breed back to a Red Ranger or other Alternative meat bird I will go with Dark Cornish (or another color pattern).

The Cornish X have made it 16 weeks old. One is getting very heavy but very active the other seems light in weight, not sure if its lack of feed intake or if she is sick. They look to be the same size but their weights are way off.

The Rhode Island White X Red Ranger is growing fast, I have 2 and one is much larger than the other but both are larger than other birds from their hatch.

I haven't been taking pictures because the lack of hatching and the getting rid of birds is a bit depressing. So much fun to build up coops and flocks, not so much fun to take them down.
so many are selling off.. has to be hard
wish you well in your endeavors

@Compost King When will you be starting a new breeding project? I am already starting to hatch chick's from the female that hatched from one of your egg's that was marked FNN, with my NN rooster Rodger over her. I'm keeping the bibbed chick that has the 5 toes on each foot. @Parront has one of her chick's that had the 4 toes on each foot.

Looks like the hen of this chick I have is 1/2 Red Ranger, 1/4 White NN and 1/4
Silver Grey Dorking. So the chick is 1/8 Dorking, 5/8 Naked neck, 1/4 Red Ranger. Time to cross back to Red Rangers or Dorkings?

I would pick the breed of the 2 that lay's egg's the best, so that you will be able to hatch more chick's from out of the cross back. :lau

Eggs are good. The Sandhill Dorkings are supposed to be pretty good layers until they go broody. I wanted them for broodies, I have Barred Hollands and Leghorns to lay eggs. For nice meat birds, Dorking are supposed to taste great. :drool Lots of any that I would hatch will be invited to chicken dinner. Unless you want such eggs to hatch in your incubator!;)

Tempting...

The 2 hens from Compost King were invited to be breeders at a local farm. I'm waiting for them to separate them for eggs. They had a NN Rooster that needed some ladies and I had some ladies that needed a rooster. Time will tell.
