Crossing my Red Ranger Hens.

Pics
I should have waited for Tuesday, which would be the 6 week mark but I had the camera in hand and my Silver Grey Dorking X Red Ranger just happened to start coming out of the dark corners of the Juvenile coop.

The chicks on the near side of the feeder are all his age. The one chick on the far side is a month older. The SGD X RR is slightly larger and heavier than the standard fowl chicks a month older. Good sign he will make a decent table bird without having to wait too long. I am starting to like the pattern, although its not real high quality its still the columbian pattern that I like working with.

Here he is at the feeder next to one of his brooder mates which is Maran Black Sex Link. This is a good photo of how much larger he is.

From Last weeks hatch, SGD X RR at one week old. Behind him is his/her half Sibling a full Silver Grey Dorking, in front of him is a Maran x Production Red mix. I took pictures of the others but the focus and lighting were bad. This one shows the best size contrast.

The 2 on the left are the males from the Ayam Cemanis X Red Ranger cross. I lost interest in them since they didn't carry over that Fibro Gene from the father. Looks like the is sex link gene. Females are already in the breeding coop and I didn't get over to that coop with the camera. The offspring of the Ayam Cemani and his half Red Ranger daughters is where I am going to focus. That is not going to get started until spring sometime when the ladies are laying.

The color/pattern on your Ayam Cemani/Red Ranger cockerels looks a lot like my Blue Orpington/Red Ranger boy. He's about 6 months and the Orp/Ranger hens I put him with are almost two years old. I really like the Red Ranger crosses, they're huge!

Due to constantly flooding and now Mud everywhere I haven't been in much to give updates. The Ayam Cemani X Red Rangers are 14 week old and their frames are large for their age but they are not filling out with meat as I had hoped. Still 2 to 4 week away from when I projected them Table ready and we shall see then if they flesh out.

The Dorking X Red Ranger is 7 and half weeks old and much larger than those he hatched with. I would take pictures but he is covered in mud. Its pretty bad out there but we have 7 straight days of no rain and hopefully this place can dry out a little.

I can really spend much time posting because I am 2 weeks behind on my day job work due to the flooding so when I am caught up I will have pictures and more details and hopefully a scale to weigh the birds.

How do DorkingsxRR compare to BCMxRR?

Hope it dries out soon. Take care of what you need to do. I look forward to the updates when you get a chance.

@Compost King How are thing's going on over there with them now?
Things are going fine but I am having mud issues to the point I lost my chicken enthusiasm Then I have a computer issue that makes being online a pain. I just came back to do the 18 week update on the Cemani X Red Rangers. 18 Weeks was my target date for a bird worth dressing out. I have 2 males at 18 weeks one feels meaty enough to dress out and the other is still a bit Skimpy however better than a typical heritage breed at 18 weeks.

DSCN4076.JPG

I also have 2 females of the same age but they seem about 2 weeks behind the males. The females kept the Fibro trait and the males did not. The Famales are going into a breeding program to make a fibro black meat bird.
I never bought a scale to weigh them as I had intended, I have been deal with grading/Mud issue from that snow storm last month that flooded my property.

I didn't take pictures but the Dorking X Red Rangers seem to be a big larger and are growing faster. I have 3 different hatches of them now and about a dozen in total. That one looks more promising as a decent meat bird. I also 3 in the incubator now and Plan to hatch a few every 3 weeks/Month. The 18 week point for my first Dorking X Red Ranger will be March 12th. Not sure when they will flesh out but their frames grew faster than the Cemani X RR and with some luck they might mature sooner. 18 Weeks was my estimated target time span. Come Summer I will be breeding CX with heritage roosters.

I have Naked Neck X Red Ranger in the incubator now but I only had 2 of those ready when I started the incubator.

I will keep in touch when my new computer finally arrives, I had to return the one I bought and wait for the repairs. Kinda sick of mail order lately, everything shows up broken!

This is the Silver Grey Dorking x Red Ranger at 13 weeks. Large Frame but not filling out as much as I would like. He does not like the camera and avoids contact with me. Hides under the Thorny Holly Shrubs. I finally grabbed him for a decent photo but I had to distract him by showing him a brooder full of chicks to get him to sit still. I am guessing its a male but to be honest I am not sure. He is larger than the flock I hatched out a month before he hatched out. He immediately left his brooder flock and starting running with the older chicks as soon as he got to the coop. The SGD x RR I hatched out the following month were hatched out with pure Dorking's and the Dorkings look like Bantams next to them.

The Ayam Cemani X Red Ranger male is being prepared for slaughter this coming weekend at about 20 weeks. I wanted to do it week 18 but I had far too much to do. The Males did not inherit the black traits. The Females from that breeding are going to bred back to their father. I have no real set goal other than to keep breeding Fibro Trait birds with meat birds.

Hatching out over the weekend and into Monday, Naked Neck x Red Ranger. In the back ground you can see another NN X crossing but its not a meat bird so that's for another thread. I should be getting a Cornish X chick next week from McMurray,. I was supposed to get them today but McMurray said my order delayed. I bought the white Naked Neck to cross with a Cornish X but for now I will cross him with Red Rangers.
