Crossing my Red Ranger Hens.

Pics
If I may ask, why are you breeding for the longer Brest bone rather than breadth?
More White meat, I do not like strong flavors of meats so I the few meats are eat are white chicken and white sea foods. I do not even eat egg yolks just the whites, the Yolks have too strong of a flavor. It may have to do with my gallbladder being removed.

....Also needs to be on a levelish surface
I have had mine a couple of years
I found this out with my bathroom scale (which I use to weight my live chickens as I hold them) a small piece of plastic that missed the garbage can ended up under one of the 4 corners and suddenly I lost 25 pounds over night. Took me a while to figure it out.
after having my first digital scale I would say I prefer something less digital. I only bought the bathroom scale because it came with a high amazon rating. I have to weigh myself 10 times before it starts getting consistent results, then I have to weigh myself holding a chicken just as many times.

Fine scales also need calibration and adjustment to compensate for altitude... which I found interesting. It can have an effect in soap making and fine measurements. I never thought of trying my bathroom scale! I might try it before we process the next cockerels!

You must have very calm chickens. :D
I wish! I learned how to hold them to where they are comfortable yet they can't move their legs or wings, if they start making noises I can tuck their head in my armpit and they go silent. My chickens are not calm and hate to be handled. Wish my cat was the same way, she keeps climbing on me or trying to knock tools out of my hand so I handle her and not a cordless drill.

I Finally sampled some of that last Naked Neck X Red Ranger cockerel I processed Tuesday. He was the youngest I have processed in this Red Ranger offspring experiment and by far the best. The Neighbor who received the dark meat said it was the best chicken he ever had. Good thing I over produced this crossing. I will be eating Naked Neck X Red Ranger all summer long. In the next couple of days I start a hatch with a few Ayam Cemani X Red Rangers, this time with a legit Ayam Cemani as the previous one was a mix. Currently hatching in the incubator are 1/4 Red Ranger 3/4 Dorkings. Hoping that mixing in Red Rangers will make the Dorkings more hardy.

I finally caught this guy and weighed him, 5.3 pounds. My processing table isn't clear right now or I would be dressing him out. I ran out of chicken from the last victim so time to find a new one. He is 16 weeks old now and only 1/4 Red Ranger. He was part of a failed experiment to make all black meat naked necks. I am restarting that project this time with a verified pure Ayam Cemani and not some oversized cross I used before. Meanwhile I shall turn him and his brothers into food.

He looks like a substantial bird. 16 weeks is a popular age, as long as they are not crowing and fighting too much before then. Naked Necks seem to have better personalities, with less of that. Lots of the Arizona folks like them.

Wouldn't it help by breeding those NN's that don't have the black enough skin back to an Ayam Cemani to re-enforce the black skin in the Naked Neck's?
