Could it be?? I awoke to the strangest noise Saturday morning. Not a crow...but what I wonder could be the precursor to a crow. I believe my little not-a-pullet from my all-pullet pack is welcoming the sunshine at 6:00 AM the past two mornings. I really wasn't expecting this at quite such an early age...

It's possible...time will tell

My landlady, who lives on the same acre, doesn't know how many chickens I have managed to acquire. The other day at work (we work in the same building) she asked, "What's up with Carl? Is he sick?" Carl is my EE rooster, the only one she knew about.

I had to admit I had "a" juvenile chicken that turned into a rooster, just starting out crowing. She laughed and said she was relieved Carl wasn't ailing.

Oh, lordy... I have FIVE roosters! Two are Silver Sebrights, and that's what she's been hearing as they mature. Plus a bantam Buff Brahma cockerel the same age (13, 14 weeks). That buff Brahma has the most strangled trombone sounding crow right now - but the Sebrights just sound little and tinny. And now a 4 week old bantam cochin that's a little rooster butt. The baby roo hasn't tried to vocalize yet.

I've GOT to stop buying bantams from feed stores - they're always straight run, and I have such lousy luck getting pullets in those purchases. If I want any more bantams, I'll have to hatch 'em or buy 'em older.

But of course... I shouldn't be getting ANY more chickens. No more. None. Not a one.

I can't say he's gotten to the strangled trombone stage yet. Actually, it's kind of cute....although somewhat annoying at 5:56 AM on a Sunday morning. I wish I could describe it. It's not a noise that any normal human would associate with a rooster...at least not yet. It's still very high pitched and almost melodic. If he keeps waking up the sun, someone may become the wiser though.

As a side-story...like I said, I heard if for the first time Saturday morning. We had a hum-dinger of a thunder storm Friday night. It's the first one the chicks have experienced. It got cranked up about 12:30 AM and I just put my faith in the almighty that they would survive the ordeal and went to bed. So...when I heard this strange noise at the crack of dawn Saturday morning, I just knew somebody was in trouble. So I jumped out of bed and ran outside to check on everybody. Nobody was trampled or broken...they just looked at me like okay...where's the treats!? We first-time chicken mommies worry too much!

Oh yes, and from very scary to very funny. A couple videos of my young ones learning to crow.

You can usually make babies crow by playing adult crows on a phone, radio, or anything he can hear and does not need to be loud.
