Crumbles = crack for chickens

So I supplemented the layer pellets with some higher protein crumbles during the molt and now my 3 girls are digging a hole to China under the hanging feeder looking for more! It's gotta be gooood stuff, as they're digging through rocks. They're going to have to eat the pellets eventually though as they're not going to get any more feed at all until they do. Makes me wonder though, if they are this crazy for the stuff, do they need it?

From what I understand, the crumbles are compressed to make the pellets. So, basically they are the same thing nutritionally speaking. Some chickens to prefer the crumbles to the pellets though, but the pellets are supposed to keep the waste down since the chickens can't flip them around and scatter them like the crumbles.
