CSU - Chicken State University- Large Fowl SOP

This bird has three major faults. The lower breast is flat, poor wing carriage and it has a bunny tail. Notice that it is a straight line from the chest to the shanks....it should be curved/rounded like the stern. The tail is rounded instead of the "tee pee" or tent tail. This is usually because the bird does not have stiff tail feathers. More than likely it also has a narrow head. Note the length of the beak. Great camera shot though.

Pics borrowed from another web page, a male and a female that I really like. It says that this line was from Shelby Harrington.

This female is a good example of a proper Wyandotte tail...it should not have that cushion right before the back though. Note the roundess and depth of the lower body compared to the Bantam pictured earlier. This is a good example of a proper profile.

The first female looks like a Rock in this picture.....it may not in real life. The second bird is a better example of Wynadotte type. It also has a bit of cushion and needs to be a bit deeper in the lower front, has maybe a narrow head, but over all looks like a Wyandotte.

Thank you for noting this Walt. This helps me for the future selections. Regarding the male in the picture above her, from my eyes he should be a little fuller in the chest and the depth should come down and be more rounding underneath, giving a rounder appearance. Would I be correct in this observation?

That is right on. . The male needs what you noted, the wing carriage is to low in the picture. It looks as if he has the stiff tail feathers you need for the tail, but the tail condition is so poor it is hard to tell.

That is a terrific female....the cushion may not show in the short time a judge has to look at her and may not show at all under normal situations. If they show a cushion when walking in the pen or foraging, they have a problem. You see how the cushion interrupts the backline?

Just a question, but how do you tell if a chicken has a bruised wing or not. I am planning to show and want to take the BEST of my chickens. I have not been able to find it!! It would be nice if someone knew and could answer my question!!
